I originally bought my Z87 motherboard and 4670K in Jan 2014, fully intending on keeping it until Q1 2016 and then upgrading to Skylake. Sadly, earlier this year, my Z87 motherboard broke a week after the warranty ended. I replaced it with a better Z97 board. This put a spanner in the works as I spent an additional €170 for essentially a more detailed BIOS and prettier heatsinks. To upgrade to Skylake in 2016 became a little bit of a broken dream.
However, I thought, why don't I extend the life of this Z97 motherboard that I'm relatively contented with by picking up a 4790K and overclocking it as much as I could. I'd skip Skylake entirely and wait until the next big architecture is released, either on the enthusiast platform, Skylake refresh, or Cannonlake. The only issue I see with this is that I won't be able to upgrade my SSD to an m.2 PCI-e drive as soon as I had hoped. That's the only major benefit I see with Z170.
Any thoughts? My system is an R9 Fury running at 1440p. I'm mostly playing GTA V, but I'm also into titles like SoM, Dishonored, MGS, Mad Max, Deus Ex, Hitman, Tomb Raider, Battlefront.
