Upgrade question.

Hello,

Currently I have a 500 GB mech HDD and was looking to upgrade.

It fills up pretty quick and then I typically just reformat it and start again. ( About every six months to a year. )

But I now that my HDD is starting to fill up again I'm thinking that it would probably be better to just upgrade so that I'd almost never need to format it due to lack of space / speed.

I have been reading about SSDs and generally people say buy the biggest one you can i.e. 480 GB but to me that seems like quite a lot of space just for the OS and drivers? ( the price isn't really much of a problem but I'd prefer not to spend too much on storage. )

My plan is to get a 2TB mech HDD for storage seen as they're so cheap right now but I'm undecided on the size of SSD as I don't want to spend too much if it only last as long as the warranty. Which I guess isn't a bad thing seen as some SSDs have 7 yr warranty from what I've heard.

Thanks for reading.

EDIT --- Are Hybrid HDDs of any use? ---

You can get away fairly easily with a 128GB SSD for OS, some programs, and a couple of games.

If I were buying one now, I'd get a 240GB/256GB since money isn't too much of an issue. This is a pretty typical size which people will buy for their OS, and the majority of programs, and also quite a lot of games as well.

The 2TB HDD sounds right on the money to be honest, plenty of space for the majority of people's needs.

For the SSD it's advisable to avoid OCZ, I have one and it's fine, but many many people have problems within months, and they've been bought out now, so I don't know what that means for RMA and stuff. Get a brand like Samsung or Corsair; they're nice high quality drives.
