Unforeseen consequences overclocking the impossible I5 2300 @ 3.6 Ghz !!!

Hy there ! This is my first time posting on this forum, so i say with this occasion that is good to be here !!!.

And now to the point . From what i've heard the i5 2300 processor has a locked mutiplier, so the overclocking is a bit tricky science the rising of the bus also rises the video bus. Now i have an ASUS P8P67 with an i5 2300 , and 2x2GB OCZ Blade ST ram @ 1600 cas 7-8-8(these frequency values and cas timings are the factory default).

I've managed to overclock(aparentely) the processor at 3.6 Ghz using the the AI Suite 2's auto overclocking feature. After the reboot i've got the confirmation that the overclocking was successful(like in the picture).

At these setings the 3dmark vantage and 3dmark 11 are running normaly(with no artefacs). But when i tried Dirt3 i've got a BSOD(i was't to surprised by that). I forgot to mention that my video card is an Asus Radeon HD5870 v2 1GB DDR5 256-bit clocked at 868 MHz(GPU) and 4800 MHz(memory) by default.

I mention that the temperatures are more than normal. But is this to much from this cpu/gpu ? What setings should i make for this to be a stable overclock.

With an AMD cpu, Dirt series games will BSOD if the HT Link is unstable. Whatever the equivilant is for Sandybridge (QPI Link AFAIK) you should manually lower it.

The fact you have only been upping the BUS/ FSB adds further weight to an instability here

From experience benchmarks aren't very good at fault finding - they are built so you can use an unstable clock to get a higher score

OK ! So let's take out from the equation the 3dmark's and the Dirt3(i have my doubts about this one). What would be the perfect(most sensible with the oc) game for testing an overclocked rig ?

Just "got out" from Mafia 2 and the real Temp shows maximum 48C. Could've been a problem with my Dirt3 game? Or i have to test it a little bit more ?

Fast moving FPS are good (I use AvP). Any game where things are only in the feild of view for a split second, not benchmarks as they are almost always gradual transitions of camera angle so very gentle on the cpu >< gpu link. If the QPI or whatever it's called is unstable you'll get black screens randomly then get back into the game and another black screen later - also random parts of the screen will go black if unstable.

Alternatively, if you installed your games on a heavily fragmented disk that may be the cause of the problems and not the cpu >< gpu link.

Before we go calling disk errors though it has to go through the ram first to get processed so it may be that - what's your dimm configuration? I found games ran much better when upgrading to dual channel 4gig dimms from just the one in single channel.

Turbo Ratio (By all Cores) 35

Internal PLL Overvoltage Auto - i sow it got up to 1.248

Memory frequency Auto 1097 Mhz with 7-7-7-18

I used Dirt3 and cpuz. Playing the game the multiplier rised up to 34 (from 103.0x 16 to 103.0 x34). Real temp showed maximum 52C

Later i'll test the system with AvP to see how it performs.

PS: What settigs should i make for the cpu to stay permanently at 103.0 x34-35 . Also i forgot to mention that when i first overclocked the cpu, (when i got the bsod) i did it from the autoi overclokc from the bios and i might had at that time the memory frequency to high.

I don't know about Intel voltages other than they are usually 0.1v below an AMD at the same frequency. You should always set overclocks manually, any kind of AI stuff trips over it's own feet - and too high memory could account for the BSOD

I totally agree with you ! Best way to oc is the manual way. But i'm new to the sandy(bell)

platform so i tryed the auto mode first. Till now every thing works ok but the auto setting might set a higher voltage and couse another bsod. I must study the way of the "Force"
