Under volting a pump ?

In my new build I'm re-using my koolance PMP 500 pump, but to control it i either need the controller unit from Koolance or a fan controller with 32w or more on each channel, I'd rather not go either route as ther isn't muh room in the dead Silence.

So I had a thought, we are all used to changing the pins around on a Molex connector for fans, to lower the voltage, would this be possible with a pump ? With only a cpu loop, the power of the pump isn't needed.

In my mind it would be ok, if anything the pump just won't work, if anything over volting is were there will be problems. Am I right, or completely of track and in China ? Cheers guys.

It should be ok to undervolt the pump as it is rated from 6-12v with startup voltage being 5-5.1v and may be higher for your pump. You may need a rheostat or resistors rather than the 5v output.

Cheers buddy, that was the article that sold me on the pump, I had bad luck with D5's twice in a row, so wanted a change, not only that it has a high pressure top built in, also a heat sink. it's a dam sexy looking thing too.

I've almost 360 since posting earlier, I'm leaning toward, a Lamptron CW611, The front of the orange Dead Silence needs something to break the orange up a tad, so the CW611, fits the bill lovely.

You'll be fine with changing the molex pin outs to reduce the voltage, shouldn't be any need to fiddle around by adding resistors seeing as the pump is rated at 5.5 - 12v max any way. Check the OC3D Pin Outs thread if you need any help.

What i meant is that if startup voltage is 5.1 v a 5v conversion may or may not reliably start the pump depending on what yor psu is actually putting out. If it is more it will be ok. Tolerances are from 4.75 to 5.25. 7v would be fine.
