Well I thought Id give Ubuntu an install. So I got the new download of the live cd, played, saw it supported my wireless nic and then hit the live install.

Only problem is, taht my screen is at 800 * 600 so I cant see any of the buttons to press at the bottom. I cant enable the nvidia mode because it requires a reboot and being a live cd wont hold the settings.

Anyone got an idea on how to get around this?

You can specify a resolution by pressing F4 (I think) and setting a VGA mode before booting the livecd.

There is also a resolution changer in gnome on Desktop/System>Preferences>Screen Resolution/Display

Or the keyboard shortcut is ctrl, shift,+ (to increase)

Ovb first so o the screen resolution in the system menu and see the avail resolutions if a required 1 is not there then

open a run box and type

'sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf'

look for the section that will be something like this

Section "Screen"

Identifier "Screen 1"

Device "** Intel i810 (generic) [i810]"

Monitor "My Monitor"

DefaultDepth 24

Subsection "Display"

Depth 8

Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

ViewPort 0 0

EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"

Depth 16

Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

ViewPort 0 0

EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"

Depth 24

Modes "1280x768"

ViewPort 0 0

EndSubsection

Change the available resolutions for 24 and 16 bit modes to whatever u wish (eg "800x600" turns to "1600x1200")

then press |ctrl + alt + backspace| (NOT DEL) all ur res shd be prety :D

can u not move the installer box? (i only use gentoo linux a nice text based installer :D )

Thanks guys!!

You know what I didnt see that F4 option. Im going to leave ubuntu on my test machine as default now :D Its a poain that with windows Ihave to re activate it every 30 ays esp when I dont want to because i just want to test things and then fiddle.

Now if I was brave enough and intelligent enough id LOVE a mythtv box running but the instructions might as well be in reverse polish notation.

For a low spec machine that is used for the net and email, im happy with it :D

(anyone brave enough to help with a mythtv install.. please stand up)

mythtv :D i had a myth box in my living area but it is also our server and one of the guys dint like linux so asked it to be moved to XP (it made him feel emasculated ya no not having a clue) but i have since converted him to the linux way of life and hes for puttin it all back in

ok u want to install myth tv go to www.linuxmce.com i believe they have an easy install package (im not sure tho) oh and a tonnes of beautiful features including the bluetooth phone remote

in short i stand up

quick update. doing f4 and seletig a decent resolution still brings me back into 800 * 600

'sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf'

brings up getit : command not found (EDIT FOR BEING STUPID AND DOING A TYPO)

and the screen res isnt avail in the screen res box

when i boot up it ttells me that some restricted drivers are no in use including an nvidia based one.

Cant move the installer box @up@ either :-(

**another update**

Tried editing the xorg.conf file, cant save it becase its a read only file on the cd as its a live disk. I now see why I stopped using linux :-(

Once you have it installed properly you should be ok.

For the nvidia GLX drivers all you need to do on ubuntu 7.04 is go System>Administration>Restricted Drivers Manager

then tick the nvidia box and apply :)

It's a lot easier than it used to be, altho tbh it wasn't that hard before. It's just people are used to the windows way of doing things.

You could also install using text mode.

You need to restart and because its a live cd you cant lol

**w00t**

Screen res changed and just about to install. You know with how far linux has come and providing i can setup linux not to kill my drive that has dows on it, tis tempting to venture further and try things like Wine and such.

Can see why people like linux, been a while since I had a challenge like this. Might revisit the "week without windows' thread that I started

**unw00t**

So now i try and install it to disk and select the first option

Guided resize IDE1 master and use free space.

An error occoured whilst writing the changes to the storage devices, the resize operation is aborted.

Sheesh is linux always this much of a PITA?

hehe :)

I love linux, but I have been using it since 1998 and before that I had experience in DOS 6.22 + Win 3.11 aswell as novell etc. I like being able to control and customise the OS without it trying to put stuff right and in the process falling over itself.

I think people who use windows are scared of using a keyboard and expect everything to work straight away.

I like the way unix works aswell tho :) mounting stuff etc.

There is a big learning curve, but once you get over it and learn commands, the way the os and 'drivers' work you're ok.

I learned the most installing gentoo stage1 via console. It took a while, but I think the amount of stuff I learned in that 7hours was amazing. Previously I had used corel linux, redhat linux, mandrake linux, suse linux and slackware linux. :)

I had a redhat book and a suse book which I read aswell to learn stuff. The main thing being the commands. I found a sort of cheat sheet in the redhat book of DOS to Linux commands.

How linux is now tho, it is 10x easier than it used to be. So much is automated and graphical. They even have graphic effects (something unix/linux users wouldn't even want 5-10 years ago).

So I think it should be very easy for people who have knowledge in computers and installing windows etc to get into linux. You don't even need to partition the hard disk manually any more.

Ill stick with it for a few hours tonight. All for the sake of wanting to move some sodding files around lol.

Just annoying that ok, i did enjoy sorting out the screen problem and now know how to do it, just that when you start messing aroundwith disk partitions and things dont go smooth and then a few error messages, gets your worried.

Ill go into the live cd again in a bit and see if i can get it working, cant say that I not trying :D

The easiest way is to let ubuntu sort out the partitions for you tbh. I also found problems re-installing linux without properly formatting the drive before I attempted to install it. It caused me much anger!!!

well that worked well, select the option to create a partition in the free space.. and... I loose my NTFS drive and all the stuff that i wanted to get off there in the first place.

There is a lost and found folder that i dont have permission for.. arse..fek..poo...etc

hmm :(

The easiest thing to do is leave some unpartitioned space and tell it to create the linux partitions in the unpartitioned space itself.
