TTL What do you think about the 970 memory debate ?

As in the title.

I still think the 970 is a very good card and brilliant at addressing it's target market. With all the debate going on at the moment I was wondering what your point of view is please.

Probably that everyone is overreacting a little bit, reviews dont lie, it is still a great card.

+1

I want to see some thorough testing done because I don't think it is much of a problem at all.
Nvidia lying is a big problem, but I don't think the actual card and performance is a problem.

I tested Watch Dogs last night and had no stuttering with over 3.5gb vram being used meaning my card was always accessing the 500mb section.

I just tested FC4 and got no stuttering with 3.9gb+ vram being used throughout.

4k low settings with 4xmsaa.

I'm in 2 minds about it.

1. On one hand I think people attacking the product is a little bit silly. The card is still awesome, great value for money IMO and lets be honest the majority of users (Yes even us awesomeos with our uber PCs) will not really be effected by it. At least not in real world terms. If I was someone who'd bought the card for general gaming purposes I wouldn't be too annoyed. If I was a benchmarker or someone gaming at 4K or maybe even high end games at WQHD i'd possibly be a bit more miffed and would maaaaybe consider asking for an alternative

2. The impact it has had on my view of Nvidia. As many people have said in the other threads here I think the point should be less so on the product and more so on the fact that Nvidia would definitely have known about this! They're not stupid and it was shady to sell/market a card as something it isn't truly. Sure some people may argue it "technically" has this or that but at the end of the day when an enthusiast hears 4GB they want all of that 4GB to be equally superior.

Technically the cards still have 4GB ram, just its not accessable all at once, the manufacturers won't be issuing refunds etc because of this, but the question everyone should be asking is whether or not they was aware of it in the first place......

TTL should not reply.

He needs to remain neutral and let the companies sort this out.

I'm not defending Nvidia, but I'm starting to get a little pissed off reading of users whine their cards are suffering performance wise when there is "nothing" wrong. Its proven as best as possible there is no home scenario impact on gaming. Many people are wanting tests done to force an issue to show on the card. What I tested briefly showed no problem at all.

Spoke to my buddy at the store today when i picked up new fans. No one has returned their 970s yet. So maybe norwegians are slightly more rational. ;)

OCUK, ASUS, MSI and EVGA are all issuing refunds to people who want them because of this.

I personally have not had any performance issues as of yet but I bought a pair of cards that were advertised as 4gb with 64 Rops and a memory bandwidth of 224gps and thats not what I got so on those grounds I will be returning my cards.

from what Ive read OCUK are getting hammered with RMA's

As a reviewer, Tom probably needs to keep a distance from this for obvious reasons.

I am a team red player, but even I think this is blowing up more than it should. I don't even agree with some of the tactics I have seen the AMD marketing team employ. I know why they do it, and with their finances, they need every penny they can get.

I am not sure they are actually.

I have been following this story on their forums and they are getting a fair number of people who want to return their 970s but there is also a lot of people who want to hang onto their 970s.

The problem is if you RMA the 970 what do you replace it with, the 970 is still the best option going for it's target market.

Just tested Skyrim downsampled from 8K (7680 x 4320) with low settings and 8x MSAA.

MSI AB doesn't work with the program I was using to downsample but at the end of the vid I have a GPU-Z shot showing the Vram usage from my desktop. It was using 3.8gb+ all throughout recording.

Just waiting for Dragon Age Inquisition to finish downloading so I can test that as well, but I have now done three games now all using well over 3.5gb and my 970 has not had a single problem running either of them.

Ive only gone by what ive read on some of their posts so I could be wrong.

I will be returning mine and grabbing a pair of 980's instead, my reasons are pretty much that I spent a serious amount on my new rig so that it last a long while and im now in doubt that the 970 fits the bill although I agree it is still a great card.

I actually suggest you hold on to the 970s. mainstream 4k Gaming is not gonna happen for some time if you ask me. You still have a future proof card(s) in my opinion, and what I tested with the card I borrowed, I was impressed. MSI gaming cards seem awesome.

This just in, an "Nvidia engineer" comments on the situation.

This was just too funny not to post.

I notice many threads are being closed with a post with this vid on many forums. Since there was a serious question posted, please delete my post instead of locking the entire thread of this is inappropriate.

And finally Dragon Age Inquisition.
Despite the low framerate (had to max the settings to get the Vram up) you can see that things stay perfectly smooth, no stuttering or frame dips.

After all the games I have tested, I have found that "personally" there is no problem with the performance when going over 3.5gb and accessing the separate 500mb section of the Vram. Another thing to note is that as you cans see in MSI AB overlay, the memory was also running at 3056mhz the entire time with no dips or stutters in all the games I tested.

4K ultra settings, everything maxed out.
