Triple Channel Ram

Hi guys, I have a question. Say you have a dual channel ddr3 memory kit, would adding another ddr3 memory with the same brand, clock speed and timing make it a triple channel memory? Or do you really need to buy a 3 ram kit for triple channel to work? For instance if you buy a single ddr3, and decide to buy 2 similar ram sticks, would they work in triple channel?

I mean does buying 3 single ddr3's with the same voltage and the same clock speed and timing work for triple channel? I am really confused in this matter. I always thought that triple channel would work as long as you have an x58 motherboard and 3 similar rams? Do you actually specifically have to buy a 3 ram kit?

You are right. The kits just make it convenient and ensure that the ram is matched. It's best to go with the same brand, voltages and timings for stability sake. Mixed sets (brands) will work together though, but some boards are more picky than others.

or buy 3 sets of 2
