NEVER SKIMP ON A POWER SUPPLY.

just had the fright of my life, PSU just blew, huge spark, tripped the electric in my house. hoping it didnt kill everything in the process. the PSU was a powercool 650watt powering whats in my siggy. it lasted abour 10ish months, so it is okay i guess for a budget PSU. but im afraid my that me being tight with my money may have back fired on me.

so in an attempt to save 40 quid, i may have lost my whole rig. how silly of me. im just a poor music student so will have to sell one of my basses to pay for a new one... this time i will NOT skimp. please take my advice when i say dont skimp

it was a massive bang, really loud (woke up two of my room mates, and i had headphones on and found it loud) im thinking a capacitor has blown, more than likely right, will try and get a picture for everyone without killing myself in the process.

please take my advice and dont skimp.... its not worth nearly messing up your trousers out of terror.

on a side note

whats a good branded PSU that will be able to power my rig (spec is in the siggy) and where to buy from?

im going to be missing out on playing rift beta...

Best brands for PSU brands are Corsair, Seasonic. Followed by Enermax and NZXT. What country are you in? It will help us in finding the best place to buy them.
 
Well I like my CoolerMaster, but some forum members say it's bad and it's gonna explode and kill me. However it's yet to kill me, but considering that even under full load it barely goes over 50%, I'm not really pushing it.

i get told that too but ive had mine for 3 years now still working fine, probs just luck

i bought a hiper, it lasted as long as it said it would...then it went bang, but it didnt take anything

so i got a high rated tagan for a low rated system, so it will never be under stress, and might last?

in theory?

Hope your rig survived bro, and like ppl said get a corsair TX650W if your on a budget.

PS. Rift will have another beta in a week or two

Remember to add a suitable extra margin if you're planning on overclocking cpu/graphics fiercely. I forgot and will have to take it easy.
 
Like the guys said, Corsair and Seasonic are currently the best brands, however, don't think these can't also fail. I have a 6 year old cheapo psu from an old dell that is still working fine and have a Cooler Master that came DOA. But really the key term when it comes to computer hardware is "You get what you pay for". Cheers mate, hope you didn't loose your rig.

With Corsair warranty, if it blows up and damages your rig, they'll not only give you a new PSU, they'll probably give you a model up, and pay for everything that was damaged in the resulting explosion. Provided it's still under warranty of course.
 
im in the UK atm, have found a corsair tx 650 for 65pounds, free shipping, since you guys reccomended that i think i will go for that unless anyone has a reason to spend more / choose differently
 
it should be more than enuff to handle what you have mate, hope ur stuff aint dead tho mate and cheap psu's can be a pain but u can land lucky sometimes
 
well, none of the connections seem blackned, and im hoping the fact it tripped the house means it tried to dump the power back into the wall rather than into my system, shall be picking this up. just removed the old PSU, its been around 50 hours since it popped, still stinks of burning and rattles alot. thankyou everyone for your advice
 
What about the Corsair Builder Series? You can also opt for a more efficient (and expensive) PSU, since in the long run it could end up saving money when it comes to the power bill.
 
dont feel bad, only posted as there is a chance someone will read this and think twice, orderd the corsair TX 650watt should be here monday fingers crossed, and 65 quids was the cheapest i found including delivery. oh wells, have an interesting paperweight for my coursework now atleast (:
