Third time is not a charm

So, i have tryed crossfiring a 5770 with no problems ever with another new one on this board. Kept getting random shut downs as some members will remember. Tryed it again with a replacement. Same thing happened again. (Both cards were found to be faulty bar the origional). Now i have abandoned all hope with a 5770 crossfire and gotten a shiney new Twin Frozr 6950, millitary class components and 12 year life expectancy at full load - what could possibly go wrong?

RANDOM SHUT DOWNS D:

I even ditched my 3.8Ghz overclock back down to stock and it's still doing it (the crossfires played up even before i ever overclocked anything). But there has never been a problem with the oldest of the 5770s (now boxed up in a chest). It can't be a power issue becuase one of the rma'd 5770s killed the system under load even on it's own in the same slot as the other working fine.

I'm getting bored of this now, really, i feel like soon as i touch another graphics card it immediately doesn't like me. Two 5770s and a 6950 and all causing problems, is it really possible three cards in a row are all faulty? (from Ebuyer). The only thing i can think of is the hard drive, which is the slowest part of the system, but it never hindered operation with the old 5770.

I am lost. Should i RMA yet again only to end up with a fourth and fifth card to send back?

I think I would start looking at other things that may be causing the cards to go bad. Not certain thats it but its a start point. kinda blows as its hard to pin point thru this medium and without other parts to change out easily.

think it might be the mother or maybe faulty crossfire drivers. try using one at a time(so you discart it is your mobo)

it may be your mobo - not the cards

!!!

It's still within three year limited warrenty but i've overclocked it so won't it be void? (is @stock atm). And i've never had a problem while using the very first 5770 so why would the mobo cause no trouble for that card but havoc for these three? :S

Just ran a two rounds of maxed heaven benchmark and was all hiccup free. But then benchmarking never failed even with an unstable 4.3Ghz overclock so doesn't seem to be the most reliable form of testing.

So my question then is will the mobo still be covered?

Btw it just did it again after a 45 minute session of Crysis. The game saves are getting slower and slower every time i save and when i pulled and plugged back in the power lead to power on again, the past couple of times, i have heard a very low pitch fart kind of sound coming from the hard disk spindal's sort of location. All this and stuttering between the text being on the screen and me pressing the keys of my keybaord point to the hard disk needs replacing - which i suspected last time. Think i'll keep the card for now, order a 500GB Sata III drive, install windows and try running any game for about 8 hours straight. If it passes then we know what the problem was.

have you tried with a different psu? might be worth checking your temps also.

Just cause it's new don't mean it's not broke, psu's are very hit and miss these days,i've had 2 d.o.a psu's the last 3 months.

reason i think it's the psu is because you say it happened after 45 mins of gaming when system is on load,

If it were a hard disk i would suspect you'd notice other problems also.

I'm gonna get a caviar black next month to test, but yeah i'll look into RMAing the psu aswell, thanks.

The way i see it is the games can run, but not for extended periods of time. Therefore all processes are functional so all processors are functional. Inturn, the only two non-processing parts are the psu and hard disk - if that makes sense?

Yup i'd go with the tx-850, that'll give you an extra 100watts of juice also, for any future expansion, and they are reliable psu's.

Also ring the retailer and ask for store credit rather than a refund,as most of them take ages to get a refund back, and this will be a little quicker.

just give them the product code/s for the items you require.

Update:

I have sorted an RMA for the PSU but there was only an option for a direct replacement and not for a refund - strange considering they have none of this unit left in stock but if they have a working one spare fair duexica to them.

Just waiting till tommorow to call them, then find out which day i need to box everything up and go without my pc

Update: PSU is being collected Thursday but i'll wait till Wednesday evening to box it all up. They now have 70 odd in stock so gonna get me a replacement...
