Thermaltake 'designs' at Computex 2015 look familiar

Gotta agree with Tom on that, Coolermasters case just looks like an updated stormtrooper case with a fullsize windowed side panel and no handle on top, Inwins looks completely different in shape and form, the only thing they have in common is they both have a full sized window.

And wasn't the Stormtrooper itself essentially a cheaper rip-off of a Lian Li? Definitely inspired by the Lian Li.

As long as the changes are enough, it's a new design incorporating good ideas from elsewhere. The issue here is the outright theft of design from Fractal and Case Labs.

The Asus ROG's were BitsPower

Yeah I know about the mobo blocks, but I could have sworn I saw a Swiftech CPU block with a ROG logo. Might have just been my imagination though ;)

You can google "Swiftech ROG Block" and it will come up. Turns out its made by swiftech and asus allowed them to use their logo.

Hey Tom

This TT and Caselab shenanigans is beyond reasonable doubt that yes TT did something really inappropriate why i do not personally know from a behind scenes pov as you said youself has caused a right stink but all i know is from all that i have seen and watched on YT and read in various feeds news or otherwise. TT has some serious questions of ethos coming down to its modus operandum, however arent we in an age of paying for non manufacturing brands effectively outsourcing to those brands and businesses that need companies that do their grafting and testing for them?? The second part of manufacturing and outsourcing i can understand but literally cackhandedly getting yer hand stuck in a choccy digestive jar (other biscuits are available from your relative kitchen space or shops)

but then to insult to injury you have a giant chocolate cake smeared grin of a 3 year old when trying show off to the nice sciencey tech asian people that put on a tech party for all whom that wanted show off their own products and projects only to be caught by those nice caselab kids aswell as the cool smart down with twitter and facebook kids that waited to see what wee tam thermal did with all that money. And ooh look wee tam thermal made a techyfake (looks like caselabs and a fractal but somehow isnt quite there)

Basically i am callling it as i would see it and i have to agree with TTL's fellow tech YTers Jayztwocents and Barnacles and call it a dick move as Caselabs IS NOT a massive empire but plaguerism and cheap fakes happen all the time.. So who really wins? I am sitting on the fence but gently leaning toward Caselabs for this whole debarcle

HI all,

I saw the vid from TTL and was gobsmacked by the whole thing but not entirely surprised. What has surprised me has been some people's reactions and strawman-ing of the actual problem. There have been cries of "bandwagon" and blindly following the "thermalgate/thermalfake". in some cases i think this is true but i have lost all respect for people like Logan from TekSyndicate for their obtuse and disingenuous comments around the issue but i digress.

I am a product designer and visualiser by trade, i have nearly 20 years of experience with this kind of crap both from the PoV of having products i created copied and from the PoV of being asked by clients to make "different enough" copies of existing products. As a person who likes to sleep at night I have turned down jobs and in one case severed all ties with a client who wanted me to outright copy a competitor. The nonsense (and strawman) argument against the backlash i have heard (and here Logan quoted this on twitter) is that the insides of the case are different. This kind of deliberate obtuse counter argument as they see it as being against the mob mentality they see in the backlash is a special kind of B(*&sh*t. If the reverse has been the case (i.e. the insides were identical but housed in a very different looking outer this would not even be a thing. I also saw a tweet from Logan replying to Jayztwocents where Logan actually mentioned that people who didn't know who caselabs were will now know who they are because of this, as if caselabs should be happy about the publicity! Are you kidding me? The point and crux of the argument is that the OUTSIDE looks the SAME. Before anyone thinks this isn't a problem with people in the know (enthusiast, etc) is IRRELEVANT. MOST people are not in the know, MOST people will never see a caselabs case up close unless they buy one as they are not stocked in retail outlets. What TT has done is a shameless attempt to shortcut their insertion into that class of case, plain and simple. Rather than create a product in the same class with similar or the same level of function and options they CHOSE to make the outside as similar as they did.
This kind of practice is a cynical attempt to muddy the waters is what bother me the most. I have a client who produces what are arguably the best made safes in the world. They contains INCHES of steel and the top rated one can take a .50 cal hit and all it does is chip the paint. They have a competitor who regularly steals designs, website content and even f*(ing model names! The competitor takes potential clients away from them as they try to muddy the waters with bullshit ratings and terminology, which to anyone "in the know" can see through. Unfortunately , as mentioned before, most people DON'T know and look at the price which on face value is lower. It's incredibly hard to bring any kind of meaningful legal action against them and hurts their business.

If a manufacturer wants to have a try at making more cases in the same class as caselabs and can do it cheaper, more power to you. More competition, better for consumers, yes please. there is no justification for making a "new" product look exactly the same as an existing (competitor's) product, none, end of.

Thermaltake

I've looked at Thermaltake's products over the years and found them all to be derivative and priced normally a minimum of 20% below whoever they copy. However, most of the products, if you look closely, look as if they've taken shortcuts in build quality. I simply don't buy them. Never have and never will and always tell my friends to steer clear. There will always be a company that produces knock offs. If people don't buy their products sooner or later they'll get the message.

Well considering their copy and paste job from the FD R5 is more expensive.. that's not always true. Can't wait till they announce the price on the CL copy..

Thermalrippoff! If you can't produce an original product don't ripp off someone else's!!
Thermaltake have been ripping off other manufacturers designs for year's now, I think that caselabs should proceed with their copy rite policy! I will never ever buy a Thermaltake product ever!! inferior designs to say the least, It really damages the the things that I love most!! I think they (Thermaltake) should be held accountable for ripping off other manufacturers designs!! I love Caselabs cases! keep making those top line cases guys!! ps: Thermalrippoff lost my support forever!!!

ThermalTake Fake

If you have ever seen a Fake Rolex alongside the real thing, you can tell the difference. This is no different since the TT cases will not be the same quality as a CaseLabs product. The issue for me is credibility, since if you buy a fake Rolex, you are a cheapskate wannabe, but with a major brand like TT they kill their ability to bring their own unique products to the marketplace.

This is bad business on an extreme level since now TT has become the cheap knockoff vendor for all things custom pc related - "I wanted the real thing, but could only afford a TT Case".
They shot their credibility to the curb at a major show no less. :whipping:

Kudos to Mark and Tom; moral authority is now added to technical authority and takes you to the next level of awesome.:)

The chutzpah of these people. Thermaltake do get five stars/platinum for lame and lazy though. As you point out all the info from the spying effort has to be translated into actual hardware anyway: they have to create engineering drawings. I would just come straight here and note every instance of eg. "An extra 5mm and you could push-pull."; implement it; and put an acknowledgement on my advertising and packaging.

There are any number of excellent products out there that I personally hold off on buying because of some obvious niggle like that. The NZXT Noctis 450 for instance; I like the improvements on the H440 but the aesthetics they should have left alone.

Wilde was quoted upthread; sincere flattery on Thermaltake's part this isn't; blatent ripoff is what it it is. :ar:

Thermaltake warrant extra kickings for poor execution and not doing the bloody obvious. If you haven't got the imagination to do an elegant ripoff, hijack someone else's imagination. Considering this has been an East Asian tradition for over a century and basically why China, Japan, S. Korea, and Taiwan are successful nations, this is particularly egregious stupidity. Take a formula that has worked for centuries and balls it up: rinse and repeat. WTF?

It has been pointed out also that seeking legal redress might be pointless. This is true; but I would take another tack: face, a huge thing in East Asian cultures. Point out that Thermaltake's behaviour plays into a lot of rascist stereotypes and puts China and Taiwan's reputation in the gutter. Make them look bad (both China and Taiwan as well as Thermaltake) in as many high profile ways, media and fora as possible.:devious1:
