But the average speed doesn't tell the full story.
A lot of households in Denmark is getting fiber, but my parents only had 25/25Mbps for a long time, but the ISP upgraded to 100/100. And they can get 500/500 if they wanted.
100/100 = 299 DKK = 36£
500/500 = 449 DKK = 55£
I'm living in an apartment block, and still using cobber(COAX), and i have the biggest pack possible. And we are locked to that ISP, unless we want to go the old ASDL way :)
300/60 with a discount 349 DKK = 42£

Long story short, they should look into the max possible speed/price, not what the 50+ wants to pay for :)
And i think my buddy in Norwich are more ed by the quality of the line, than by the speed :yelrotflmao:

Not sure about this Spain has awful Internet speeds. UK/France problem is people are spread out over so many different places. In other parts of Europe most of the population lives in 3 or 4 cities, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Eastern Europe etc.

Myself I barely had an upload speed until about 2012 now it's not too bad. I'm not on Fiber either.

Well my net speed is even slower that any of those

My net as its highest is 3.9Mbps upload and download is 0.9 on average and never goes much higher if ever, half the time I struggle watching youtube videos in 720p, and can rarely use my webcam, I live in the North East of the UK if you're wondering.

not really that surprised, internet is bloody expensive and coverage gets worse the more north you go typically.

You are kidding aren't you? The UK has almost triple the population of Australia yet a land mass of about 3% of Australia. I live in the second biggest city in my state with a population of a whole 110k and I can get up to 100/50mbit VDSL2. My brother was living in a small country town with a population of < 500 yet he still had access to the same type of connection.
You could wire up the entire UK with fibre for less then what it would cost us in Australia to wire up a single state...

I've recently switched to Virgin after they cabled my street. Download speeds are great, getting over 200. Uploads have slowed down vs Plusnet. Now get 12Mbps. It's ridiculous, I don't need synced upload/download but you would hope they can do 50 up at least.

 So they spend money to dig up the street, but don't but down fiber???

As long as you have options to select speeds it is fine. In Serbia we can get maximum of 150/8 Mb/s, and it is about 45 euros/month. But there is a note "up to", and it is never that close to max speeds. There is no option for higher. I have heard that you can sell your kidney and afford to equalize your up, and down speeds. But in general it is pathetic.

to equalize your up, and down speeds. But in general it is pathetic.

It's the difference between cobber and fiber. In cobber the line is in most cases asymmetrical, as the line can't carry as much data. Every time i have updated my line, i have revived a new home box, as faster speed requires a new standard.

As to the, it's easier in smaller countries? But the companies gets loads more money in the bank in the UK, as the lines seem expensive, and there are more people.

It's the way your government handles it, that's the problem. TDC = Tele Denmark, the nationwide telephone company was owned by the state, but is now private. They own all the cobber lines, and most of the backbone network in Denmark, but by law the need to lease the lines to other companies.
On top of that, the power companies have started an alliance, and are pushing out fiber in different areas in Denmark, so slowly more an more are getting fiber, all the way to the home FTTH https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_to_the_x

Well there actually is a Wiki about it :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_Denmark

Oh Korreborg... In my country most of the houses don't even have cable for CableTV. They use ADSL over phone lines, that have so bad wires that IPTV content on TV is lagging. In my parent's house better option was to go Wireless antenna internet. Fiber is just a thought here. Whatever internet you have trust me it is good.

Well its the ISP's that is the problem. When we moved into our apartment 7 years ago, the internet was crap, and we had cable, but the latency was crap.
It got better over time (probably upgrading their backbone), and buying my own router solved the lag spikes :)
Then a couple of years ago they went FTTB, so its only the last stretch that is cobber, så i have low latency and pay for 300/60. But in reality its 360/68 most of the time. And they are in the process of upgrading to Docsis 3.1 so 1000mbit is possible.

But the problem is probably too many ISP's, that have to make their own network themselves???

Friend of mine in Romania is on a 1000Mbps line and pays around £20 for it, I get a 150Mbps line from VM and pay £40 a month with constant service outages and at least 2 price increases per year.

Having worked in various EU countries, The UK is so far behind the rest of Europe in a plethora of ways it's not even funny, Everything here is done against the people and to make life as hard as possible.
