The time is near...

Hello.

The time is near, I'm finally taking the plunge on getting a new GPU, especially with certain offers on certain websites.

I'll be getting a 7950 for sure, I'm settled on that, however I just need a bit of... reassurance with the following.

Upgrading to a reference 7950, from a HIS HD 5770 - I don't think noise will be a concern, while I'm gaming I don't hear fans much at all. Performance wise, in real time world - not benchmark, from what I've gathered I should see like... a 50% increase minimum? (1x 1080p I game on this - 1x 1680x1050 my side monitor for emails etc)

My specific card

In other words, can any one confirm the noise levels of a reference 7950 idle/load (silentish, quiet, hearable, distinctive, loud)

Also has any one upgraded to a 7950 or similar from a 5770 or similar card, if so - what sort of boost did you notice? (I know it's a lot, but just want to make sure)

TIA.

I'm not 100% sure but on idle the fan spins at such a low speed it's inaudible but this is only from videos not hands on.

Why not get a non reference card like the gigabyte or MSI those are quieter than reference.

I'm in the same situation. I have a 5830, did have a 5770 as well, and performance wise they're identical.

My mate has a 7870 overclocked so i've been comparing to that.

The picture quality is always going to be the same, but on most games the 5770 will reach around 30/35 frames per second, so images sometimes can jump or lag slightly. My mates 7870 OC manages 85fps on DiRt3, and as that was constrained to a 60hz monitor, images were perfect really

No lag, no jumping in anyway.

On 1 60hz monitor, like you will most likely be running, there is no benefit of getting a 7950 over even a 7850 as both will manage 60fps on most games, so it is kind of wasting money a little. But it is more futureproof I suppose, and hell, iI'm still gunna order the 7950 over anything else

When I got my 7950 it was immense upgrading from a 5850 was like night and day x5.

I got 3x performance increase from my 1ghz oc 5850 to the new 1100/1600mhz gigabyte oc card:

Metro 2033

5850-20-30fps (AAA)

7950-60+ constant (4x MSAA)

Battlefield 3

5850-25fps on high

7950-55+fps on ultra

What Nathlm said!

I've just upgraded from 5850s to 7950s (the sapphire reference model). If you aren't planning on watercooling then there are some models with great aftermarket cooling.

Overclockers have a deal on for the MSI 7950 twin frozr 3

You can also take it further by OCing it. Very nice
