[Project Log] The One Rig To Rule Them All.....

Hey people, I have been lurking and watching videos for quite some time and thought now would be the perfect time to start a new build for myself. I am currently running an A4-3300, utilizing its on-die GPU the 6410D, which considering it is integrated is actually quite good. I have a HD7770 coming my way until my baby can be built.

I used to have an I5-2500K with a GTX 570, but someone who shall remain nameless wouldn't leave me alone until I sold it to them as they wanted a gaming rig but didn't know how to build one and I didn't have the time to teach them about why AMD cpus won't fit in an Intel socket. :fish:

I want this rig to be my one and only rig until the next major shift in games graphics.

My new rig shall consist of:

Asus Maximus V Gene Z77 (already ordered, shall be here on Tueday)
I5-3570K
Corsair Dominator-GT Red 2133Mhz (changed from plats, works better with colour scheme)
Corsair H100i with Corsair SP120 x 4
Corsair AX750W 80+ Gold (would this be big enough for a 2nd GTX 670)
Fractal Design Arc Midi (unless someone has a better suggestion)
Corsair AF120 x 2 (infront panel)
Corsair Force GS 180GB
Western Digital 500GB (Currently using, will be carrying it across)
EVGA GTX 670 2GB

I shall be updating this log as and when I order parts and with pictures when they arrive. And if parts need to be changed for any reason.

the Maximus V Gene is mATX... go for a matching case, small boards look funny in regular sized cases

I have mine in a define mini, but the arc mini may better suit your build. you can still get the h100 in in the front of the case with a simple mod by removing the drive bays (which may be an issue with your hdd, but to get round this I use all 2.5" drives located behind my motherboard tray)

alternately, go for a full sized motherboard?? :p

I wish to go a bit more compact than full atx, but thought the mid tower would provide more adequate air flow across the board. If i had 2 front intake fans (AF120 x 2). The plan was to use 4 SP120s on the H100 to provide some monster cooling. As you stated I had planned to hide my hdds behind the motherboard tray.

I have not had a look at the H100i yet? Is there anything in particular about it that makes it special?

Asus Maximus V Gene has arrived. It is my first Republic of Gamers board and looks even better in person than in any pictures or videos. I actually got goose bumps when i slowly opened it. It is now in safe storage awaiting more parts. Will upload pictures a bit later via editing this post.

Interesting...I may switch to the H100i it is only £8 more.

Does anyone wish to suggest any cases that would go well with a black and red theme?

EDIT: The one thing I would like to do if possible is get a case that will still be matx but allow me to install the H100i in the top of the case.

Asus Maximus V Gene Pics

Here is a pictures of my brand spankers Asus Maximus V Gene. Also bought a VTX HD7770 as a stand in so I can game at 1080p with a good frame rate. Usually play Black Ops, Crysis, Fallout 3 (classic). I aim for anything above 30FPS, but if possible 60FPS as my monitor refresh rate is 60Hz.

EDIT: Might actually get the NH-D14 instead with a push/pull config.

i had a few teething issues with mine, but now i love that board

What problems did you come across with the board?

I also need somw suggestions for an matx case that can house a H100 with rad in the top. I need to be able to put 4 Corsair SP120s on it too, so need the clearance from the board too.

nothing too serious, just had a few issues getting it to boot properly initially, wasn't detecting all my drives and stuff. the error codes are great though, helped me get it sorted quickly. ^_^

tbh, your gonna struggle to find a nice looking mATX case that will support that without some modding, 2 fans is already 50mm thick plus the radiator... if you get the SP120 PE fans and undervolt them, one pair in either push or pull will be easily good enough for the setup and mean picking a nice case is easier.

if you go this road, try the fractal arc mini. i love fractal cases :p
there are other good options to though.

take a look at the define mini, beautiful matx case, the best in my opinion, although fitting push pull in that case would require some modding to the roof panel, but hey, building a pc's no fun unless you cut it to pieces first

it does, i use & love this case, but options are limited natively, theres no space for anything 240mm without some kind of modding

The final build has changed slightly in light of recent research:

Asus Maximus V Gene Z77 (already ordered, shall be here on Tueday)
I5-2500K
Corsair Dominator GT Red 1866Mhz
Corsair H80i with Corsair Performance SP120 x 2
Corsair AX750W 80+ Gold
Fractal Design Arc Mini Corsair Performance AF120 x 2 (infront panel)
Corsair Force GS 128GB SSD
Western Digital 500GB
EVGA GTX 660 2GB

But I want to get the top and front mesh done in red to match the color scheme.

Lovely. Go the extra mile for a 660ti if you can.

Ohh and check all the sata on that Gene, it's a lovely board but I had some issues too, with the first one :)

There were several boards that had some issues with the last sata ports. Bad soldering or slightly loose ports. So check them thoroughly before building the rig, cause it's a pain to build everything nice and tighty and then have to rma the board :)

Thanks for the heads up. I shall check the board as soon as I can, just so I don't get all my parts and then have to RMA anyway. What exactly happens? Does it just not recognise the connection or does it blue screen or what?
