The Official Netbook Thread

Hello all,

Thought i'd make a thread containing all current netbooks and their specs

This thread i created on eBuyer so there is a lack of external links

All Netbooks on eBuyer can be found HERE

What is a 'netbook'?

Netbooks are "small laptops that are designed for wireless communication and access to the Internet. And they cost about £200, making Netbooks a potentially disruptive and high volume market segment. Even though Netbooks won’t be confused with full-featured laptops, my hunch is that tons of people around the world will be attracted to a low-cost machine that plugs them in. The Netbook will expand the global PC market. By how much is a matter of conjecture."

The term netbook was re-introduced by Intel in February 2008 to describe a category of small-sized, low-cost, light weight, lean function subnotebooks optimized for Internet access and core computing functions (e.g., word processing) — either directly from applications installed on the netbook itself or indirectly, via cloud computing. More than 50 million Netbooks are expected to be in widespread circulation by 2011.

If you own any of the following, feel free to come foward with reviews and i'll be more than happy to add them in!

Review By TimmyGCSE - Rep Him!

Looks

Amazing, sooooo nice. Much nicer then the eee 701
cid:image001.gif@01C90903.CFF74350
I've got the blue one and it suits the colour. My only gripe is the glossy finish shows the fingerprints like mad and it annoys me but apparently this is the same as the 901 so there we go. Its very sleek and stylish and Asus have got the styling perfect imo.

Usability

The keyboard is actually really really easy to type one, not quite full size but not far off, not made any typing mistakes due to the keyboard size. The mouse pad is a bit weird with the click buttons down the side but I'm getting used to it. In terms of opening it up etc. yea its brill, no complaints at all, all the buttons are in the right place, nothing to complain about.

Features

It certainly feels quick enough, though I've just ordered another 1GB of RAM (explain later). The atom CPU is pretty nice. The system boots so so damn quick. The battery is a little bit disappointing, around 2.5 - 2.75hours from a full charge but I expected that to start with anyway, all the reviews said it (and at the end of the day its no difference to 900). But its super light...seriously!

SSD space is a bit meh, 3.6GB free from 8GB but thats the OS really..see below

OS

Linpus and I got off to a bad start. I did the updates and it didn't work properly so I had to do a system restore, this is about 10 mins after turning it on! Anyway system restored, updates done (need to do em coz the keyboard won't work with UK layout) and all is good. Its very simple as you'd imagine, and its good for a basic do this do that but not really too advanced. I would highly recommend enabling the advanced mode and adding a start button to the menu, guides can be found on the aspire one users forum. This makes it alot better to use and you can do quite a fair bit that you would with a regular linux distro, I'm currently having a problem enabling the full desktop mode (it breaks all the settings programs and stuff when you do) so I'm hoping someone will tell me where I am going wrong with that on the aspire forums, I've got it working temporarily but when you reboot it will disappear so when I try and make it permanent thats when it doesn't work. When it works temporarily it looks really nice (xfce desktop so yea I like xfce). All in all though Linpus is rather clunky and not my idea of a distro, if I was to stick with Linux I'd stick xubuntu on tbh, still uses the xfce desktop but has the slickness of ubuntu. Like I said I've just ordered a gig of RAM, this is for XP. half a gig is enough for Linpus but I need my XP man!!

Other

Annoying - speakers are on the underside at the front so when its on your lap they get muffled by your trollies. Headphones need imo.

The fan is abit annoying but that could be again that my trousers are covering the fan holes up and thus it has to work harder (though this kinda defeats the name laptop eh )

Build quality is excellent, everything feels solid and not cheap and plasticy

Conclusion

All in all I'm very dead chuffed. There are a few niggles like the OS and battery life but there are always going to be compromises with devices like this imo, its just about managing them (for example putting XP on). I would recommend this device to anyone looking for a netbook that can't afford a 901

This Netbook itself for general use if perfect. My main reason for buying it was mainly for College and to use in the living room in the coming winter. Myself as a gamer, it doesn't appeal that much to me, although I have pushed a few games to run on it. The Advent 4211 does not have a CD/DVD Drive so a USB memory stick (2GB Min recommended) would be ideal for data transfer and for installing applications and software.

Due to it's ultra small screen (10") it can be a bit hard to get Windows Live Messenger in full view, mainly because I have over 100 contacts online in the evening. However, apart from that it's fine. As you can expect, with it only being a single core at 1.6Ghz and only 1GB RAM take away 32MB for the integrated Intel Graphics Chip, it is a little bit sluggish.

The Netbook from the store (Only avalible at ******** branches and other stores connected, I.E. ******) comes with Microsoft Works 9.0 and it comes on a CD aswell, which is nice if I want it on my Desktop, it comes with a full backup (2GB USB stick needed for Windows Files to backup).

The sound on the Netbook is not great, it has Realteck HD, however due to the small speakers it is tinny. However, if you have any decent head phone or portable speakers then that's fine, as the laptop itself outputs some very nice sounds and it perfect for movies on the go.

Moving onto the battery life, it says around 3 hours, but depending on how much you're pushing it, well... it varies. I use it with Wifi on all the time and sound on half with a perfect level of brightness and I get around 1 and a half to 2 hours life out of it.

All in all, I would give this Netbook on the basis of it being what it's designed for, a 8/10.

Review By Tommyboy12 :

Looks and Layout.

The thing looks great. The metallic blue sets it off very well and i think it looks better than the Aspire One's blue, but as with the Acer it suffers from grubby finger marks quite quickly. The chassis is large for a netbook but not so large it looses its purpose. Its very well laid out with video and audio ports on the right and connectivity in the form of USB and a network port on the right. In order to maxamise keyboard space the power switch is in an unconventional place of on the right side of the machine behind the kensington lock. The chassis also feels very sturdy and well built, it may be a slightly hefty 1.3Kg but it carrys the weight evenly and it helps it to feel well built and strong.

Hardware

Well the main thing to say here is the EPIC battery life. Ive had it going for 8 hours today before it flashed a battery warning. Its not even as big as the Eee 901's battery at a mere 5200mAh next to the 6600mAh of the Eee. The mammoth battery life is probably down to the battery manager software included by Samsung which is constantly turning things off and dimming things to save every milliamp possible. The fact that the Samsung has a conventional power hungry HDD makes the battery life even more incredible.

Other than that the hardware is basically the same as all netbook's. The 1.6Ghz Atom is enough for everything you could want to do on a netbook, except in the Maximum Battery setting where it is turned down to a mere 800Mhz constantly. Then it begins to suffer quite quickly and struggles to even run two or three windows at once. The 1GB of RAM easily makes for smooth running of the machine too although upgrading to the 2GB limit im sure would benefit as paging could easily be disabled. It of course comes with the obligatory SD slot too.

Another note would be to mention the keyboard and mousepad. Although the keyboard is 93% full size according to Samsung the mousepad is still more than enough to get from one side of the screen to another in a single scroll. Although vertically it suffers slightly it is helped by a slider bar on the edge of the mousepad.

Lastly the speakers are, to be quite honest, pants. There may be a HD audio chip onboard and Samsung's EDS program to make it sound silky smooth the speakers are far too small to be used for anything other than listening to XP make its usual array of sounds. A decent set of headphones is must to benefit from whats on offer.

OS and Features.

Well what can i say. Its an XP machine and it runs it very well. Unfortunately it is in no way compacted or refined for the Samsung but it does come with SP3. There is also a variety of 'bloatware' which i disposed of quite quickly. This included McAfee and Samsung Recovery Solution. Both of which slow the machine drastically and are just not needed. Interestingly the Recovery Solution keeps its original backup even if its uninstalled so you can press a hotkey on bootup and be able to recover without the program being installed. Speaking of hotkeys it comes with a large array of these. Apart from the power button there are no other function buttons on the machine its all done by hotkey. Volume, screen adjustments, wireless, battery management and fan speed are all changed by hotkeys.

Conclusion.

An awesome netbook if you can take the steeper price. The price is definately worth it though. It comes with everything of the Eee plus the 160GB HDD and 7-8 hour battery life. I would just say i dont recommend the white one. It looks tackier and cheaper than the metallic black and blue.

I Hope you can all benefit by reading this thread

Again, if anyone owns any of the above, e-mail me with your review or just post a reply under and ill copy it in

Pheew nice post :D Will certainly help some people to decide which to buy. I have been looking for a netbook but am going to a laptop because of my demands regarding CPU power and RAM.

There more than 1 version of the asus eee 1000, theres the 1000 that has a SSD (40gb) then the 1000H that has a normal HDD (think its 80GB or 160GB.) There's also a couple of others.
