The Oculus Rift has overtaken the HTC Vive as Steam's most popular VR headset

Rightly so.

As much as I knocked on the whole VR experience, when comparing the two I found the Rift far superior. Controllers felt more natural, and the SDE on the Vive was incredibly off putting to me.
 
Maybe now they will start to understand that the reason VR isn't catching on is because of the prohibitive price. Then they may find that nearly every PC gamer will have at least a go.

I've been calling it for years, but the cheapest headset will win the war. It doesn't need to be the best, it just needs to be affordable.

Yep, same as me although I've been less vocal about it ;)
Only reason I don't own a Rift is because it's owned by Facebook otherwise I would.

This is where UK get scammed a little I suppose. It now costs 3100Nok for the rift bundle in Norway so that includes the touch sensors. If I do a conversion it equates to £286. Pretty decent price if you ask me. What they should be doing however is maintaining to sell the products without the touch sensors too.

For those who like Driving sims, or Flight sims. You dont use the sensors anyway. All you need is the headset.

Sensors = £60x2
Controllers = ??? (dunno price but not cheap for sure)

Remove that from your £350 pricetag and you got exactly what you need I guess.

Well you do need at least 1 sensor otherwise it doesn't work properly ^_^

Yeah I wouldn't use the controls for a start. I don't want to stand up when gaming and I don't want to have to dedicate a whole room to it or risk bumping into something. Plus why would I want to put virtual rubbish in a virtual bin when I am better off putting actual rubbish in a actual bin.

Yep, i meant to comment on the need for one but forgot to edit the rest.

I suppose that is the one benefit the Vive has. You dont need a sensor behind you for full 360 motion.
 
I'm saving for a VR headset for Elite Dangerous but I'm loathed to pay the extra for the motion controllers I'll never use. I've got my eye on the old CV1 headset/xbox pad kits on CeX where they're cheaper second hand, but still pricey overall.

It's worth it, The first time you see ED in VR there is no going back, The sense of presence and scale is breathtaking, Docking at a station for the first time in VR you realise how freaking huge stations actually are.

Dog fighting in an asteroid field in a 1 man fighter is epic, I giggled like a 10 year old on Christmas morning the first time I tried it ^_^
 
I'm not buying a headset just yet. I have started the month off three times thinking "Right, I am saving for a OR this month!" only to have had second thoughts and bought bike stuff instead.

There are problems with VR that I don't think will be resolved any time soon. Like the resolution, for example. It needs to be much higher and they need to eliminate the "checkerboard" problem as well (or screen door problem, if you reside in the USA).

I would describe VR as it currently sits as "Promising". If FO4 VR was not standing/motion controls only? it could have really started to take hold. I'm not being funny or anything, but FO4 is a game you play in long sessions. I am just not fit enough to be standing up moving around and waving sticks for 10 hours. I would much rather be in the comfort of my chair, playing with the controls I have been using ever since FO3 in 2008 and being able to move my head around. That is enough for me.

It's kind of gutting, because FO4 VR does work perfectly with my DK2 but you can't move. Well, you can move your head (and even on the low res it looks pretty spectacular) but you can't physically move.

Was really hoping and praying they released a controller version but it's not looking too likely. I could try VORPX, but I will wait a little bit longer as the writer of that keeps shoving the price up more and more and I have absolutely no idea if it will even work properly.

Edit. Just checked and it seems some one called Jess posted toward the end of Jan stating there would be controller support coming.

If that happens? deffo getting a CV after test playing with my DK2.

I think for scale Star Citizen would really be impressive. Aren't the ships bigger?
 
I have a Rift, still haven't played Elite Dangerous with it, and that's all I play. I know the immersion factor is crazy, but unless you can work a HOTAS blind, I'm staying with the flat screen. I don't want to be taking that HMD off every time I need to hit a key or touch a button my fingers aren't used to yet. Plus, I play in 4K, and I'm not sure I want to give up high res in favor of the immersion the headset offers. I *will* give it a go once the HOTAS becomes second nature, but that's a long ways off.

Love me some ED though. I'm as hooked on this as I was on Fallout games, maybe more so!

Depends on your HOTAS.

I don't take my rift off ever when playing ED. All my actions are bound to the throttle toggles etc. On top of that, I purchased voiceattack along with some voice packs in ED. Cool as hell when you say "landing gear down" and Holly from Red Dwarf starts moaning at you for making her do something.

Voice attack is well worth using in ED. It has Verity voice too which is the default ingame one. So you can either go for humor, serious immersion, or total role play with William Shatner pack.
 
Yeah I hear good things about voice attack, might have to look into that one. Usually it's the landing gear button or cargo hatch button I'm struggling with. I have the 16000M, and I'm not 100% used to it yet. 16 buttons on the stick, 14 on the throttle, a lot of which I don't use (thankfully)!

"jump to system"
"target highest threat" // switches to the enemy actually shooting at you
"deploy scoop"
"landing gear"
"deploy hardpoints"
"system scan"
"hyperdrive/supercruise"
"request docking" //tricky one to get right
"heat sinks/chaf etc"
