Well I have been wanting to try dry ice cooling for a wile now, And after finding an awsome ally pot on this very forum for super cheap. It seemed like the perfect opertunity.
I have been wanting a overclocking/benching rig for a wile now. its like having anougher toy to play with. It also means that i can take out my agression of high core voltages on this instead of my main rig.
problem is i was always looking at stupid stuff like 1366socket MB and cpu's. Untill i had a look around out and found that it doesnt matter what you are benching, As long as you are benching. All hardware gets points, less popular the more points you get. Higher OC's EVEN more points.
So I decided to go with a 775 setup, As they are cheap as chips And CPU's can be brought in abundance via the bay of E.
So I wanted a test bench to go with the new setup, But Didnt want to spend £100 plus on one SO i made one. Basic it is, But It works
To make the benchtable I started out with an old case that had been chucked in the garage ontop of a pile of bumpers engines and and general other automobile rubbish lol.
Next i took the drill to it and removed all rivets, After siffing the wheat fromt he chaff, I was left with a back plate and a motherboard tray.
so i riveted the too back togeather. to for a motherboard tray of sorts.
Next thing was to mount a HDD to the tray for easy access. So I used the 2" brackets from the case and marked some holes in witch to drill.
The I mounted the HDD brackets and HDD. Because the brackets are already threaded I just needed to screw through the underneath of the MB tray to get a nice secure fixing.
Next thing was to order some hardware
I looked through all the pages I could fined on this forum and on Others, And came across a DFI infinity dark MB E6600 CPU with cooler and 4GB of ram for a £50.
Next i needed a few random GFX cards. And to be honest after searching ebay I could not belive how cheap some of this hardware has become. For instance.
On the left A GTX 280 Cost me £25 works perfectly well in games, But for some reason wont fold
. And on the right is a 9800GTX + Cost me £15 posted off of ebay, And it works great and even folds nice too.
Also I am still waiting on a 8800GTS that I got for £10, And GTX 8800 ultra that I got for £20.
I then decided to beuil a stand as such for my MB tray so I could house the PSU and other gubbins. Also Got a Cheap as chips Fan controller so I can hook up more fans to the rig.
I Through some paint at the MDF tabe. And cut a slot on the top for wires a whole in the front for the MB powerconnections, And Also made a slot that will take the fan controller.
I also decided to get the MB prept for DICE cooling. So I got the misses to get me 3 pots of clear nailvarnish, and some petrolium jelly. Their was no way I was going into a shop to buy those items togeather thats for sure. I could just see the look on the face of the cashier as she is ringing that lot through. A big hairy Builder buying nail varnish and petrolium jelly......................Suits you sir.
Also grabbed some 100% pure acetone and a Large box of moldable Artist rubbers.
Now that lots adds up to a good night of benching, or some sick sexaul goings on.
I had a quick go at some overclocking. On the stock ram I was only able to get 3.8GHz out of the chip. So I got anougher absolute bargain off of ebay.
2GB of Corsair Dominator Brand spankers in the packet. For £13 posted
I thought this would help with it being 1066MHz as I thought it was the cheapo 667MHz Kingston ram that was making me hit a wall. But I now think it is the terrible PC world esk AKASA cpu heat sink. And it is stopping me from raising the voltage And increase of .2v is too much for the heatsink to take.
So my next purchase is going to be some random air cooler, I would love to run Dice 24/7 but i just dont think that is very practicle.
I have however Gotten hold of 3 12v Peltiers. SO I may use the AKASA cooler and rig togeather some Make shift thermal electric cooler. Havent seen anybody doing that for a wile at least.
But I am in the market for a decent cooler. May go the Watercooled route with the H100 from corsair OR maybe just stick a NH-D14 on it.
The motherboard is also concerning. I have The latest bios waiting to be installed that unlocks the ability to use 45nm chips ont he boared. and also unlocks it so you can select more than 800MHZ for the ram, Not realy a big issue but could be handy. I am trying to use WINFLASH but when I select the bios to install it just says the bios size doesnt match. So I might have to purchase a USB Flobby drive from the bay of E.
Apart fromt hat I am very happy with the setup.
Need to grab a decent cooler and some more CPU's If I cant sort out the MB's bios issues. Then i Have seen the EVGA Tri SLI MB going for around £70 on ebay, SO I might just grab one of those. Altough I was kinda hoping to bring it back for DFI. being As I still love the them for their LAN party series.
DFI Im bringin it back. lol
Well thats how far I am at the momeant with the setup. Any advice would be great As All points go to the team
