It's a sad state of affairs but I wonder if they had to change their production at all for this? Were the other chips literally just left over stock?

I doubt it impacts AMD's production elsewhere. The CPU chiplets in desktop Ryzen CPUs can be used for EPYC, and EPYC must be selling very well ATM.

The 5800X3D uses TSMC's 7nm node for the CPU chiplet, and GlobalFoundries 12nm for the IO die. I don't think either of these nodes will be fully utilised ATM, so AMD should be able to get more chips made. It's the newer nodes that are saturated by AI orders.

I doubt these chips were left over from their last production run. This CPU was popular, and all remaining stock vanished when the memory crisis hit. This CPU is highly saught after ATM. This CPU is a godsend for anyone still on AM4 that has an upgrade itch, and anyone who wants to avoid today's insane DDR5 prices.
