The End of XP gets ever closer

In many ways I agree, but I'd also be in full support (and maybe admiration?) of Microsoft if they just turned around one day and said "F**k backward compatibility, it's been hindering our OS development for years. Let's start with something totally new.". And then off they go, get rid of all the legacy crap in Windows, slap in a brand new filesystem, ditch the registry...etc etc.

At the end of it all we'd probably have a bloody amazing OS that would knock the crap out of Apple, Linux...etc, but just wouldn't have any programs to work on it.
I agree with this.

Ive used Vista off and on many times. Ive also created my own "lite" copy with everything takin out that i could possibly take out and it still hogs ~700meg of my ram. Since im a gamer and like max performance for everything i dont like having a 10% drop in performance. Since i have to much takin outa my check at the end of 2 weeks i cant afford to go 4gig and an 8800GPU. So i stick with XP to get the max performance outa my machine. Simple as that.

Personally i like vista and i am glad i made the switch.. I dont know why everyone is complaining about compatibilty errors? I have had none tbh.. a few at the start now everything works fine.

It looks nice, for me it runs faster than xp, it has loads of features i like and DX-10..

Same here

I actually installed the 60 day trial of Windows 2008 Server and followed a few guides on how to desktopify it. Even tho it's not really much different to Vista, it is a lot more nippy out of the box.

Interesting that, if only 2008 didn't cost a fortune!

vista is by far the worst operating system i have ever used

it got to the point, after a week, where i would turn the computer on, it would boot up, load up the desktop, stay on for 3 minutes, then reboot

and it would keep doing this over and over

and on four different pc's of four different spec's, with four different copy's of vista, ...

pathetic operating system tbh

lol no offence but I've never ever had that happen on any OS on any PC, unless I OC'd too far

That's fair enough

I have been meaning to looking into Server 2008. Love 2003, thanks to Frag and Jim.

Jim, does it still use the amount of memory that Vista uses? Or have they brought it down a little?

only one was overclocked, and even on stock, it did the same thing...

I was against Vista so much since I tried it early on.

Things have come a long way since then and it runs perfect now.

For me atleast...

I can't remember the exact figures, but yes it uses less. It's got pretty much every unnecessary service turned off by default. Navigating around the desktop was really snappy. I was pretty impressed.

Also did i mention it can be re-activated legally something like 3 times, to give you about 120 days of use :p
