Super speedy sky

Just ditched Homechoice (now Tiscali) as our box broke (our 4th) and not only didn't they have any stock but they didn't know when they were getting any. How bad is that!! Its like a car dealer not actually having any cars (kinda) but and not knowing when he's getting any. Pathetic...

Anyway got our Sky tv the other day and our internet from Homechoice went down about an hour or two ago so I just cracked out the new Sky router and gave it a go on the off chance we were already connected.. After initially not being able to connect wirelessly due to the Channel being set to auto (phone or wireless adapter couldn't find it like that) I manually set it to channel 4 and all fixed.

Anyway just did a speed test and have gone from 3.5mbs (roughly) to this :D well chuffed.

Yes Sky Broadband is supposed to be excellent, they run on the same network as UK Online (who I am with) who run on the Easynet network. The only reason I didnt go with Sky is because they force interleaving as standard and wont disable it which is not good for gamers.

Wow, thats pretty sweet. The feeling I'd get from Sky is, if it works then great, but when you hit problems customer service can be a problem...

Plus if u download anything u shudnt they hand u over to the law enforcers asap - check the EULA or w/e they call it. Not like that will affect you ;)

Sounds good value but idnet ftw still :p

What? Sky shop you to the po-lice? That's not cricket is it!

10mb is sweet, is that constant? How much is that a month?

Ill be interested in if they actually allow you to get this speed and if it would be constant. Probably block ports, traffic shape etc.

Reminds me of my talktalk broadband days...bad times :(

Well i was thinking the same so tested every half hour or so until about 01:00 last night and it was between 10 and 11.5 constant.. I'll have to check when i go home for lunch and also tonight see if it is the same at busier periods..

edit: Oh yeah the cost.. Hmm. The free sky bb has is at 2mb. Pay £5 extra and get 6 or 8 mb with a 40gb download limit or pay an extra £10 and get 16mb and no download limit. So yeah it costs £10 a month.

Sky dont do any traffic shaping or port blocking, its an excellent service.

As for calling the police, I doubt that very much.

I tend to agree with that... Why would Sky care?? It takes their time and resources when they could concentrate on making more money which they obvously like to do (sky sports £17 ffs)... I expect they take the same action as any other ISP... Not that much.

Just imagine what sort of processing power, and storage capacity, u would need just to monitor 1 million customers.

And u semi-have some kinda ethics issue if it comes to light that the data u r processing contains people`s personal info.

Then u gotta staff it, and trust that staff 1 million %.

Thing they will do, as will all other ISPs is co-operate with the law, as long as the correct procedures are in place. Last thing Sky want to have known is that any information u send along their systems is being monitored by their inhouse people. People are paranoid enough as it is.

3.5 mbs ! sheez, I hit 2.4 something the other day on Virgin, and that was a lucky thing.

Ok home now and just did another scan.. Still 10.525mb down and 626kb up.

Will update from time to time at various times and days to see if its constant.

Yup i would think so too.. Only time maybe take a slight dip would be between 1800 and 2000 maybe.

I totally regret getting Virgin in - 4mb, constant is £17 a month. I did it as the house has Telewest points already installed... Just seemed easy.

Damn, damn, damn. I'd have to buy out the remaining 9 months just to get a new connection.

Well I gave Virgin a small thought as cable is meant to be faster but they also lost Sky 1 some wasn't really feeling it.

I wasn't really expecting to be getting 3 times the speed I had.. Not that it will be noticeable most of the time but well chuffed with it.

edit: 10617 / 639 at 20:30 pretty consistent.
