Strip down XP Pro SP2! Help REQUIRED =[

Hey all.

I am looking to create a benchmark copy of my XP.. I am well aware of the program to use, I currently use nLite.

Would you be kind enough to provide a list of things that I can disable for sure and it won't cause any problems? I had it done before and it just BSODed before I could boot in to Windows which was obviously very annoying, though I cut down the installation to 250MB!

I can't find the guide that i was thinking of, but you might find this forum/guide helpful LINK. I haven't been through it properly, but i think it contains everything needed to strip xp whilst keeping it fully functioning. i don't believe he uses nlite as it can remove things that are needed for other programs.

There is/was a nlite community forum, with betas, tests feedback etc. Think they have profiles too ? Probably linked from the homepage.

Jim has a guide on here somewhere too.

I used to just read the details of the comments nlite gave u about the services/programs selectable.

There is a much easier way to do it, and it is as follows:

Install XP fully, once you've installed all your drivers.. after rebooting etc. Go to Start > Run > msconfig > OK and then click on "Diagnostic Startup - load basic drivers and services only" and it will cut out all the rubbish.

I am currently using 38MB of RAM whilst in idle on my other install (yes I am dual booting two XP Pro's )

I now also have three hard drives in my rig but I can't get it to dual boot with the 500GB's in RAID so I haven't got a RAID array any more, but I can use the 500GB as a huge back up drive.. for Seagate Acronis etc.!

oh, useful wee trick I do plan on dual booting my gaming PC with Vista and XP so will bookmark, 38mb is a nice change from vista... around about 30 times that And I am not kidding. It was happy with about 1gb sitting on the desktop with 2Gb of system RAM, I installed 4gb and it suddenly decided infact about 1.5Gb would be extra nice

It rises pretty quick, and you have to install all your software before you enable it to cut out all the rubbish because it disables installers.

Also, once I had my graphics card in, 3DMark06 and RivaTuner.. I was up to 150MB when just about to launch a benchmark, and it only gave me 10 points extra.. not worth the effort!

With 8GB, I think my idle is something crazy like 2.5GB, but vista likes to precache (or whatever its called) which is quite nice. on my EEE, with 2GB installed, on an nlited version, I was idling at about 50Mb but that was with quite a lot in, only stuff I would never use out (i.e. languages/help). There might be a bit of help on the eee forums in terms of managing XP and nliting it. Probably not ideal for benchmarking (on an eee lol)but might be helpful
