strange samsung F3 problem

i have this really strange issue, when i power my system on from cold boot one of my F3's wont spin up at all. the only way i can get it to spin up is to unplug the sata power and plug it back in quickly before boot and that will cause it to come on

what could be causing this issue? :S i have tried it via molex -> sata power and it still does it, tried multiple sata power / molex headers and they all act the same.

system is in the siggy, and powersupply is corsair TX 650

tis quite annoying as the F3 i have this problem on is my boot up HDD (tis just over a year old... no problems before this? )

any assistance would be awesome
 
Try removing one of your graphics cards just as a test. Have you got another system to try it in? Failing that I would clone the system and rma the drive, not point in taking any chances with your precious data.
 
i only have 1 graphics card, (the 4870x2 is the single pcb one)have tried it with onboard graphics and its still the same, so im assuming its not a psu issue.

loosing data isn't really an issue, the seccond F3 is setup for weekly backup using windows backup thing (probs crap but you,know...)

i need to add that when the computer goes to sleep, the HDD spins up normally like it should, so now i am really confused lol
 
Just to rule out the psu completely, that psu has a single 12v rail. You could disconnect everything from the psu including the m/b 24 and 4/8 pin power. Jump start your psu with just the hdd power connected and see what happens? The only load will be the hdd. If you have another psu and do the same test, you can prove that the hdd has some fault.
 
tried different sata cables (there is ALOT of them, tried every single one) tried it with a different PSU, (400watt powermax? :S) and the same issue, tried it without the other HDD's / optical, no dice still.

i am really confused by this, (also tried the molex -> sata adapter cable i have and its the same on both powersupplys)
 
Could possibly be a dead drive by sounds of things,only thing i could suggest is trying it on it's own and see if it works then.
 
it doesn't work on its own, only if i plug the power in when the PSU is switched on, thats the weird thing. it works perfect after sleep sessions also, but on cold boots it just refuses, im really confused
 
Give Samsung tech support a call they might have an answer or tell you to send it back for repair or replacement.
 
they were unable to help and weren't going to take it back unless it was totally dead

Most drives have a 3 or even 5 year warranty these days. I know that WD have a tool that you can run on their drives, and if that fails they will allow you to return the drive, but that's for bad blocks etc. It does sound like a problem with the controller board on the drive?

If Samsung won't play ball then I'd cut my losses and buy another drive...
 
well, its not broken as such... it has no bad sectors, and i do backups every day of important stuff, and a weekly whole backup, so if it did die i wouldn't loose anything, i think i will just bare with it and keep my pc in sleep when im not using it (uses like 5 watts when its asleep compared to 2watts when its not) plus, its like having an SSD boot drive in loadup speed
