Started folding a few days ago and need some help

Hi again guys,

So I have started folding with this team earlier in the week and now that i have had some time to try things out, i have some questions which i couldn't figure out by myself.

firstly i have an old computer and a newer laptop, each with its own problem

[just so you know the proper specs to help out]

Old computer --> cpu=pentiumD @ stock 3GHz gpu=8500GT @ stock (both fully stable via p95 and furmark)

laptop --> cpu=core2duo T9600 @ 3.2 gpu=GTX260M @ stock (both fully stable via p95 and furmark)

oh and i use FAH GPU Tracker V2

now with the older computer my problem is that the gpu client only 1/3 WU finish successfully, the other 2/3 ~ish ones fail, usually because of (UNSTABLE_MACH...) and i think i saw it EUE once.... i was wondering if you know why this is happening

(oh and forgot to mention all the temps are good, 8800GT didn't get passed 70*C)

now with the laptop.... its SMP client is working perfectly, and i'm happy with it because it hasn't failed yet (even with the OC from 2.8 to 3.2)so thats good, BUT! the GPU client won't give me a break
sad.gif
i tried everything i know, i first tried to use the autodetect method which resulted in the (UNSTABLE_MACH..) right after a WU would start, then it would pause itself for 4 hours and the same thing happens again. The fartherist i got was to 1% with the settings changed to Nvidia Fermi (from the auto Nvidia G80) and with GPU3 client check (auto had it on GPU2 client) but then same kind of problem, after about 5 minutes, and sometimes i would reach 1%, it gets the unstable machine error... i don't understand, it doesn't even heat up much, i think i saw a max of 58*C (which is nothing compared to the max it goes with furmark-around 72*C-stable as always, well it is at stock)

ANY ideas would be much appreciated guys

and LASTLY how/where do you all get those nice F@H things in your signatures, hehe

thanks for taking your time to read this
tongue.gif
just wanted to try to explain my concerns well

Hi Mr DM and welcome to the team, I am not sure whta issues youa re having with your laptop but I would recommend posting the error logs so some of our more adept team members can have a look for you. You could also try disabling the GPU3 bit and just fold "normally" to see what happens.

In regards to your sig you need to completeone work unit before it come available.

I've had the same problem with GPU's on my pc, they kept failing and then paused for 4 hours. I've disabled them now after 10 fails!
sad.gif
Now all the information has vanished from the logs and when I tried to open the F@H tracker it asked me if i wanted to install the clients, I'd already done this. So am not currently running anything on the pc. I don't know if there are any problems with the tracker or if I've just been unlucky

I'm back to running just the one SMP on my laptop for the time being

thanks for the reply guys, and as for drivers, i have the ones from the nvidia site (they are the latest) ....

and as for the error log files, (newbie question) where do i find them
tongue.gif
cuz i can't select and copy paste what is displayed on the FAH GPU Tracker V2 screen (you know the [time] starting smp or deleted WU on GPU 0 ....)

Go to the FAHtracker install folder and then to the folder that you are using,

lets say SMP then go in there and in there you will find the logfiles...

Kitten and DMX, are your GPUs passively cooled? Or do they have fans on them? I suspect that whilst stable, they are eventually hitting a thermal threshold and failing.

My laptop is a M17x and does have a fan that'll ramp right up IF temps ever get high, for example in furmark temps get to 72*C and that maxes the fans... BUT with folding the temps never get pass the high 50's (never in the 60s") so i highly doubt that its any thermal issue

You said the GPU is a 8500gt, and that it fails. I would place money on it being a thermal issue.
wink.gif

And the barely breaking 50s whilst Folding; what monitoring software is that with because if that's correct, you're definitely not loading the CPU/GPU fully..

shit, sorry i wasn't clear in my last post :S opps, ok umm, my last post was about the laptop gpu which is a gtx260m, the 8800gt is in the older computer, and they both fail
tongue.gif
but at least the 8800gt can susccessfully compelte some WU, my biggest concern is the laptop gpu, as it would bump up my PPD a lot

Ah ok. I gotcha.

Are you setting the 'force' option in GPU Tracker for the GPU Clients?

Are you setting the 'force' option in GPU Tracker for the GPU Clients?

Yes, on auto the force was nvidia G80 and i have also tried to change that to the Fermi setting. Should i turn it off? i never tried that???

You could try it forced off. I would go with forced G80 based on those cards but give Off a try.

EDIT: What drivers are you running?

Ok, i just tried with force off, and it imidately fails (if GPU3 client is UNchecked) and with GPU3 client CHECKED it seems to work for 4 mins and then fails (ie i hear the fans start to kick in, but still i don't think a thermal problems, temps get to 62*C which is nothing IMO cuz of what temps i've seen with furmark and gaming

i'm using drivers 266.58 (checked from the nvidia control panel)

Hmm. That is odd.

What monitorting software are you using? Give AIDA64 a try if you haven't..

The pc's cooled by the internal fan on the pc
