Stacked VRAM possible for Low level API's like Mantle and DirectX 12, with two GPUs acting more like "one big" GPU when used in SLI/CF.

Old story.

Possible in theory.

Not going to happen in practice.

Why you always such a downer? Instead of saying Old story you could say this has been brought up before and is possible in theory but in practice it probably won't happen.

Lighten up. He spent time on the article.. He doesn't just pull them out his ass at will.

I for one feel this is a very cool feature of the new APIs and makes me wonder if "OpenGL Next" would allow this. In my opinion i only think a select few games will use it. Mainly games that suck up Vram like air or games that MS/AMD support to a feature/exlcusive feature it in their games. If it happens awesome. But like many others i only run one card:p

I wouldn't say so at all. I highly doubt this would be much more of a pain to implement whilst developing. It might not happen now but maybe shortly in the future so we don't end up with the need for 16GB cards or something.

Damn, and I thought I'd be able to hang on to my 780ti's a bit longer - 3GB would become 6GB over night :).

Actually I don't think it would help on current games though. From what I understand, even if this was made possible developers need to optimise future software to utilise the stacking.

Would certainly be interesting. I do wonder the ramifications on bugs and issues though. e.g. missmatch on memory type and/or speeds and how it would respond. When you think of how important it is for our DDR3/4 sticks to match, surely the GPU DDR5 would be just as important when it comes to compatibility etc?

I can't help but think that memory stacking would be affected by physical limitations, such as one GPU being in an X16 slot, while the other is in an X8 slot.
