ssd for windows online

I know this has been "answered" here before but how do I get my 80gb intel SSD to be ONLY windows 7 and have everything else automatically install to my HDD. Certain programs do not have the custom install option and I cant install it to my 1tb also it is a big pain trying to manage 2 hardrives. Is there a way to setup my 1tb as the primary hardrive.

I did some work before in regedit making the 1tb primary for installs and such but all it did was confuse windows and all the programs that come with windows like IE and such were found to be "missing" because it was looking at my 1tb drive.

I want the ssd for windows only and a couple applications like itunes and slow loaders but I want to keep everything else such as games on my 1tb drive. how can I do that? easily.

Everyone keeps telling me how amazing and easy it is to have an ssd but I have yet to get it to work nicely with my 1tb. I ahve ever posted to forums before with no sucess. quite a big bother i must say. when I have it working (with no programs installed ) like how fast windows and stuff boots up.

simplest way without editing anything is to simply tell what ur installing to load to whatever drive you want it on. Usually during install it say blankety blank will install to C:/programfilesyaddayaddayadda simply change the C to whatever drive you want.I have my games on E drive and storage on Z drive. Sometime you have to do the custom install to allow you to change this.

Have you tried showing hidden files, and show system protected files then copy all the consents of your default program files directory to your new one?

1. Edit the registry.

2. Shut down computer.

3. boot your system on a live boot disk or put your 2 HDD's into a second system.

3.5 If you are using a second system show hidden files, and show system protected files in the folder options menu.

4. copy all files to your second HDD or where ever you have set the new programs folder to. do not delete it as you should confirm it works before making any permanent changes if you can help it.

This should work but you should look for a full tutorial for more info.

Not to be rude S_I_N but if you read my post you would see I already said "some programs dont have the custom install option" aka some programs dont give me the option of where to install it.

as for yggdrasil... what do you mean put my other hardrives into a second system? back up everything? what? I tried something similiar to what I (think) your explaining and I remember it never working.

I am just wondering how some people do it so easily. I talk to people (mostly see it on the forums) people with ssd's just saying "I use it for windows and a couple programs but everything else is on my main HD its great" yet none of them explain how "easily" they did it.

Well, if they don't have the option to custom install, just try finding a portable version.

The easiest way, without going into the registry, is SymLinking.

Symlinking is hidden in the deep depths of cmd, and basically what it does is re-route the request for a file to a new location.

So install the program to your C:\ drive, then create a symlink, the the actual files are on the storage drive, and the symlinks (like junctions really, they tell the request where to go) are on the C:\ drive.

There are several GUI interfaces for this, its not hard at all, as you can symlink entire directories, not just the individual files.

actually I do not recall seeing that much info when I posted I assumed you had edited it maybe while I was replying idk but my option is valid for others so I left it. IIRC almost all proggies allow install path to be changed its just a matter of finding the option for it.

I literally built my PC during the last two weeks, did all the SSD stuff on Monday, and in reality I didn't have to symlink anything except steam games, all my other applications (except for hardware utilities) allowed me to install onto the storage drive.

not suprised lol I just came off 5 days straight of 13+ hour days. normally only work 4 10's and I was tired I dont doubt I missed something lol.

it is easy if you use the option I outlined lol if a program doesnt have an option to change the path then let it install where it will lol. I havent had any issues at all doing it the way I laid out.
