hi all

current setup:
Phenom 955 @ 3.9Ghz
Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3
Samsung Green 2x4gb VLP
HD 7770
primary: OCZ Agility 3 120gb
secondary: Samsung 320gb 7200.10

computer parts i will buy:
i7-4770k
Asrock Z87 Extreme4 matx
new 256 primary SSD
(use the ocz 120 for recording)

need: record games with fraps at 1080p 60fps

playback i have noticed:
recording 1080p 30fps to the same, primary sdd = smooth
recording 1080p 60fps to the same, primary sdd = less smooth
recording 1080p 60fps to the secondary hdd = horrible

i have tested my current OCZ drive, and as ssd benchmark says my seq write is 112mb/s ._.

seems rather slow... would this speed improve on sata III? also, is it fast enough for writing at 1080p 60fps, or will i need a faster drive to record to??

the primary ssd i was looking at getting is the Toshiba 256gb (19nm mlc nand)

I would never record gameplay to an SSD... You'll kill the poor thing within a few months x.x

A WD Black would be a much better idea, since it can still provide the bandwidth for 1080p60, but doesn't have the write problems SSDs do

i'd kill it??? wth :O

ssd's have limited write cycles. For example you can only write 100,000Gb of data to it before it dies. Unlike Hdd's which is much much higher and it takes years before it dies.

By recording videos to an ssd you will be writing massive amounts of data and will reduce its lifespan dramatically. Thats why he suggested an hdd to record videos to.

would there be any difference between the 1Tb and 2Tb versions if i went for that?

also, would there be ANY noticeable difference in the recording going from an ssd to the wd black? i really need the recording to be as smooth as possible.

btw, if i get a new ssd as my primary, i wouldnt really mind running my ocz 120gb into the ground if i knew it was going to perform better

I can't really answer that as my knowledge about recording games isn't that good, but I will keep an eye on this thread, I might learn something :)

SSD start fast then slow down as you write lots of data, a HD will have a r/w about 100 MB/s (thats my WD green drive).

i use after burner to record gameplay (1080p @ 30 fps) to my WD green drive and it records just fine.

As others have mentioned, a decent HDD should be fine, I've used my Blue drive to record 1200p @ 60fps before without issues.

I record my gameplay at 1080p 30 fps on a WD green 2 TB. The build in benchmark in dxtory for write speed says 86 MB/s and it works perfectly fine.

But as i said, i use Dxtory and the Lagarith Lossless Codec.

Your framerate will always take a hit when recording since not only does your CPU have to run the game, but it now has to encode a video file at the same time too. And since fraps is only single threaded, no mater what you do (100x xeons, for example) that hit will always be there.

The way I record (Which I've found the best so far) is to set Fraps recording at 1080p, but at 30fps. This means you won't have as big a CPU hit, and It'll also mean you can record to basically any drive.

Now, nobody likes playing at 30fps, but fraps is very clever. As long as you DONT tick ''lock framerate'' it let's your real framerate be an multiple of the FPS you're recording at. That means (as long as your GPU is constantly putting out 60fps) you can record at 30, while playing at 60 (or 90, 120, 150 ect.) :)

afterburner has multi thread optimisation though i'm not sure how well these settings work.

i used Dxtory and Lagarith Lossless Codec just now.. 30fps runs ok, but 60fps is a little suttery... why is this?

the benchmark says 180 for my ssd and 65 for my hdd

both have this problem with 60fps...

is it my cpu??

180 seems like sata 2 speeds rather than sata 3 for the ssd.

all my gameplay is recorded on my western digital 1TB passport drive connected via USB3 thats at 1080p60

Well, i do put WD HDDs in my 2 rigs, 2TB black caviar in each and i can add more later if i want, still didn't record anything yet or played much games, but soon i will do and i put those WD HDDs in use.

I was thinking to use my Seagate Momentus XT 750GB, it is very fast drive over HDD, so that may give me an advantage somehow.
