Spec me a PC...

Lo guys,

Mate of mine wants to spend 800-850 on a new PC. I came up with a spec that isn't bad, wondering if you guys can do any better.

Must have:

Decent Case (ie P180/Eclipse Standard)

Core 2 Duo

Overclockers motherboard - P5B Deluxe Wifi or better please :)

2gb (+) of RAM

8800 (GTS is fine)

400gb+ of HDD Space

SATA DVD-RW

Specifics are up to you guys though. Any help much appreciated :)

Lian Li PC7 - 70

E4300 - 70ish

2gb Cellshock - 90

P5B-E Plus - 100

Zotek 8800GTS - 200ish

500GB - 100ish

SATA DVD-RW - 20ish

Not that easy to argue against, with some cash to spare for prehaps another cooler or a soundcard or summit. U could even switch out for less storage, but 800 seems to be more than enough.

You'll need a PSU unless you already have one, how about the Corsair 520w jobbie?

EDIT: Also the newer P35 based mobo are now floating around so it might be better to get one of these?

Well you don't need a 600w PSU - 520w will be fine. Personally the Lian Li PC-7 is cheaper and just as good as the Eclipse. Cellshock ftw as it gets near 1200MHz @ 2.2v

The P5B-E Plus is almost identical to the P5B Deluxe so you save a bit of cash and Zotac or another cheap brand to replace the BFG if it's cheaper

All smallish savings but they add up

Amen brother.

Seriously though, I just ordered the cellshock to replace my dominators - they were 'the best' at the time and a huge waste of money. Deffo get the cellshocks... £95 - BARGAIN!

Paying the most does not always give you the best performance/reliability.

The Zotac card is of a high standard as it bears the nvidia name - there is no reason to pay over the odds just to have BFG on it.

PSU is worth spending money on but don't be fooled by big wattage... tbh, the corsair 520w is a beauty and comes in 600ish watt flavour too if you really want more (but it won't be needed).

As for the aftermarket cooling - if you want air get thermalright 120 ultra or scythe...

Mobo wise, I guess if you ensure it has support for 1333fsb then you will be ok for penryn (680i has been confirmed to work with penryn - there are others too)

Um, I guess that is my opinion!

Thanks Kemp for reminding me of this thread. The bloke I'm building this for ordered the bits, and is coming round tomorrow to build it. Pretty tasty spec, highlights of which include 4gb RAM, 2x250gb RAID0 HDD and a HX520. I'll get some pictures during the day, and upload em later, updating this thread.

All in all, it amounted to a £1060 order with Scan...

Hey Guys,

Just thought I'd show some pictures of the rig I built for a mate today...prepare to drool...

Specs:

P182 (I think)

Corsair HX520 PSU

Core2Duo E6600 @ 2.4ghz

Scythe Ninja HS & 120mm Fan

4gb (4x1gb) DDR2-6400 (800mhz)

BFG 8800 GTS 320 OC

P5B Deluxe WiFi

2x250gb RAID0 OS drive

1x400gb Storage drive

1xLightscribe DVD-RW (SATA)

1xDVD-RW/RAM (SATA)

One thing that surprised me was how shiny the case was:

Temps were pretty damn good, 31C idle, all fans as low as they go :)
