Speakers stopped producing sound

I have a pair of Logitech S-100 which have recently stopped producing sound, there's definitely power getting to them and I've checked the obvious i.e they are plugged in to the s/c (I checked all 4 ports just in case) and there's no breaks in the cables, I turn them up full and I can hear a faint electric hum so they're still working but just not giving me any sound.

I didn't install a driver when I got them as they worked fine without one, should I look for a driver and install that?

My ad-aware recently picked up a Trojan, which I deleted. Could it be this which has caused the problem?

Any other suggestions as to my next step gratefully received.

try the speakers connected to a portable music thingy like an ipod, if they work then you've got a software problem which would mean following the advice of davos

you need an audio driver. are you using onboard sound or a soundcard?

have you installed AC97?

Soundcard but I dunno which one, a mate of mine installed it for me.

What is AC97?

I'll try and DL a driver and install that but any more comments are welcome, it's the best way to learn :D
