Sound card help

So i've received and installed my new Asus Xonar DG 5.1 card. Now I currently have headphones plugged into the front port with the HD audio connected to the card and my 2.1 speakers connected to the card's rear panel. I've disabled my onboard sound in the BIOS

what I was wondering is if i connect the speakers to the old sound input on the MoBo will it work or do they need to be directly into the card. I ask this because i've read online that headphones sound better when plugged into the rear of the card.

Also can any of you guys suggest settings for BF3. I'm v new to soundcards so don't understand what half the stuff does and how I go about getting that directional hearing in games

Cheers

You need them in the soundcard mate. Try getting a 3.5mm extention maybe so your headphones will reach if thats an issue? for bf3 i have dolby headphones turned on in the soundcard control panel and then war tapes on in bf3 :) all depends on your preference so just have a play around mate. BTW are you using the asus supplied drivers?

Yeah I downloaded the newest drivers from the website for windows 7 64bit. I didn't think they'd installed at first but all seems to be working ok.

If i plug my headset into the back where do I plug my speakers? or is the idea that I just unplug and plug in as necessary?

Edit: What's your origin name? would be cool to play BF3 with some of the OC3ders

I use the unified xonar drivers for mine as from what ive read around the asus ones are horrible (dpc latency or something like that) It sounds a bit better to me so you might want to try that :). I would unplug them as nessecary as the rear sounds better for me aswell.

Origin name is TheSavageCupcake but ask if its Jim on there as me and my brother share the account :)

Ok thanks. Where do I download the unified drivers from? do you use a DG too?

To uninstall the current drivers do i have to do a sweep or can I just uninstall from the device manager?

bf3 settings depends on your output tbh mate, for headphones, put your xonar into headphone surround mode if it has the option. with 8 speakers (but still in headphone mode)

if using speakers in surround mode, just set them up as such

BF3 in-game settings should be hifi, with enhanced stereo OFF

Some people like war tapes but i find it more difficult to pinpoint people as it over emphasises the wrong sounds. (sounds alright though)

I've installed the universal drivers. They're such a bitch to install happened with the official ones too. It seems i run the installer restart my computer run the installer again and then eventually for no reason they finally they work. Maybe my MoBo just doesn't like the drivers. Can't say i've noticed any difference over the standard drivers but who knows.

For bf3 i currently am using Dolby on everything else standard

I just got a Xonar Essence STX and I have no problem using the front IO. You just have to enable it in the Xonar settings. Of course you have to have the front IO cable plugged into the Xonar card itself.

But yea I have had no issues.
