sound card and mic on headphones

Hello i have a creative sound card for a while now, one in my signatur,

Well i have my headset connected in a volume controler on my desk and my speakers 2.1 in my sound card plays music through it no problem, but when trying to talk through the mic in the controler it dosent seem to work..the been like that since i got it

Did the volume controller come with the headset? I'm just wondering if the volume controller is only designed to work one way, i.e. to send a signal outward and not to receive one? So the mic signal isn't getting back to your computer?

yeh is a inline volume on the headset and the speakers has a inline volume with a headphone pic on it and a mic socket with a mic pic on it. head phones are alienware ones
