Sooo slow!

My windows has been acting so slow lately...

Ive even resulted in restoring bios to default (after not being able to boot i admit, at times I was getting 5 or so beeps, it then would not do anything)

So thats at default, ive turned off windows candy, and got rid of that vista thingy that comes with objectdock etc..

Spyware doctor found no spyware, it was also using high a mouts of cpu/memory so i uninstalled that. I've used equk's reg patches to take off extra services and add tweaks etc.

Outlook express loads slower than it did on my sempron! It always has. My computer has now decided it does not want to run company of heroes (audio stutter, move the camera it seems like fps is below 10!)

I have the latest catalyst drivers and audio (after using driver cleaner too). I also use ccleaner to clean off temporary files, diskeeper to defragment regulary and tuneup utilities to fix disk errors etc.

Startup takes ages, not being able to do anything although the timer has gone (usually takes 1 minute +) which it didnt a while ago. I've got 60gb free on my 200gb drive, so its not that. This general slowness is starting to annoy me :(

p.s - My cpu hits 52 on stock while running intel thermal analysis tool, was hitting 65 while overclocked  Might I have to redo the as5? It rests at around 40 while not under heavy use.

AAArgh you think???

Could i do that thing that retains all files but restores xp? I have a lot of big files not easily backed up

If i cant, i could backup the majority on dvds etc.

find an extra hdd or buy an exsternal and back up onto that, or transpher it to another pc via lan

if your comeing to johns lan then i could lend you my sata got about 150gb free

Thanks matt :)

I may consider getting another hdd sometime and raiding it, but thats another story...inknet totally filled my hdd, ive had to delete loads

What would a repair install do if anything to help the situation?

According to u`r profile, u have a really decent spec.

Soo.. I`d be looking at it from Ham`s pov. If u`r install is old in terms of months, it will just clog itself with crap. Don`t ask my why it does it, I just put it down to innefficiency.

Backup, re-install.

There could be an arguement for adding a seperate drive to u`r system to have u`r OS on - but to be blatently honest with u, u`r system shouldn`t be running slow - simple as that.

Afaic, a repair with either eff u`r install or just overwrite existing stuff, I don`t appreciate it cleaning anything up. I`ve tried repairing installs about 8 times, and I have a 100% fail rate from just after the start.

I do indeed...

So what are we recommending? A fresh format with a fresh install?

Is there a way to prevent this occurring in the future? like programs? config?

Its only been running since october and I remember getting something like this previously but not as severe - I thought using registry cleaners and ccleaner would stop this? :(

Your best bet is to format and fresh install. Repair is only good for like getting a blue screen becasue of an accident and it cleans the Windows folder. Format and fresh install would be your best bet.

Casues a slow down? What most people dont know and what my dad has complained about since 3.1 is Windows slowly re-writes itself over time. Making it slower cause it forgets where it puts things. Of course, this could be the case mixed with other problems who knows.

Company of heroes has now decided to totally bite up on me, with stuttering fps and all that jazz!

Could ati's new 7.1 ccc drivers be causing it?

It`s hard to say what it is exactly that causes windose to slow down as it does over so many months, I know mine was installed just b4 christmas and it was working ok and is now slowing at multiple instances - the most bizarre thing is u can watch cpu/ram meters, like my g15, and at a stall point it can be 0% cpu and 23% ram .... wtef.

Sometimes u do get the feeling that there is something running over the top of windoes.

As to it crapping out and why, the cynical would say it`s designed to :p :p and come back with `if u had a windoes worker from ms in u`r house, equipped with all the info at their disposal, they wouldn`t fix it beyond a re-install`.

Have to say, mind u, a hot desk pc, using a just past sp2 stripped down XP with alot of privelages disabled, can still run well after 3 or 4 years. But if it effs, u reinstall it.
