Some HD7970 reviews

Results hardly get that much better with drivers. Both Nvidia and AMD claim big increases in performance, but it doesn't translate well in terms of fps. For example the beta Nvidia drivers gave nearly the exact performance in BF3 when compared with the WHQL drivers.

but these beta drivers are usually 99% the same there just waiting on microsoft certification (and that by no means says there more reliable!! last few drivers have been horrific!)

Oh come off it man.

Every card gets better as the drivers mature.

GTX 470 ended up right up the backside of a 5870 instead of competing with the 5850.

Just face it.

It's a very, very fast card. It's very expensive and if you're anything like me you don't like it only because you can't afford one

From what I can tell I've not noticed any significant performance increases in BF3 when comparing the beta and the fully certified drivers.

Hello !

Yeah I don't really do forums much any more.

Just generally tend to stick to social networking. That way there tends to be more mutual respect as you know the people you are speaking to and vice versa.

I'm not the most patient of individuals, and there's always some one on a forum you don't take to.

Were you snow white? I get confused man, too many names haha.

Nah, i'm just a guy who enjoyed your general ranting

Beta, Alpha, ZOMGBANGIN, INNIT ! driver. They are still early drivers.

Unless AMD do something really awfully bad then the card will mature as the drivers do. It's happened with every GPU ever.

OK, mate. I'm just talking from personal experience with regards to Nvidia drivers and from what I've read from users with AMD cards. I'm pretty new to the game so you could understand why I wrote the above.

Guru3D has done an interesting overclocking guide on the 7970.

http://www.guru3d.co...erclock-guide/1

This card overclocks like a beast with hardly any increase in temps or TDP with a really good performance increase, making it even better still and pulling away from the 580 even more.

I wouldn't call that really interesting.

Benchmarking a load of old games, mostly crap, that you'd have completed a long time ago. And more FPS (when most of the cards on show never went under 30) is not exactly going to motivate you to want to play them all again really.

Buying one for running all the games you can already run is a bit silly really.

I actually sat down and thought about it the other day. If you were one of these type that buys every new GPU then it goes something like this...

Xbox 360. £300 or so at launch. 5 years old, improved very well. It's finally showing its age, but the difference between it now and when it released is remarkable. Killer apps? many. Too many to list.

Several GPUs over 5 years. Total cost? about £2000. Difference? well, they are still using Crysis to compare the cards. Killer apps? since Crysis - 0.

To be completely honest once there is a console that can do 4XFSAA I am ditching PC gaming for good. It's a seriously sinking ship.

Most notable game this year? Battlefield 3. Takes enormous amounts of vram to run and isn't even exclusive.

For the most part it's been utter crap like NFS : The runs. With a 30 FPS cap, just to remind us how much they care about people who game on a PC.

IE - they couldn't give a rat's.

I think it was more to show what the card is cable of and how easy it is to overclock with next to no impact on TDP, heat and noise.

Thats a 1125mhz oc on air with next to no increase in temps and hardly any extra power draw, can't say the same for any other card doing that and in the conclusion he said he would push the card to 1200mhz but 1125mhz is where the slider stops.

Doubt you will see any other card clocking that high and this is without voltage tweaking, once they have MSI afterburner working on it we are going be to seeing some crazy overclocks, especially on water. Bare in mind as well that this ease of overclocking gives free extra performance with no impact on noise and temps adding even more value to the card.

It is pretty interesting when you think about the fact no other card overclocks as well as this does whilst remaining this cool and quiet.

What a buzz kill.

What a buzz kill.

Oh? so what do I have to be excited about?

Please tell me all about the exciting games coming out over the next year, as right now I don't see anything other than the new Dirt game that will fly along on any old card given that it's running EGO II engine.

All I see this year is technology for technology's sake. Where are the revolutionary titles like Mario 64?

Same old same old. Modern warfare 23 yawn. Possibly Battlefield 4 yawn (note my yawns get louder as the numbers increase).

More sequels than I can shake a stick at, nothing new it's all stale old crap.

Seems the gaming industry wants to revolve rather than evolve. Time to change the record.

I see what you are saying man I really do. However, this card, other than things about 1% would use it for, does nothing the ones we already have can't.

At least with the 5 series Radeons there was, you know? Dirt 2 to look forward to. Even though DX11 in it was pointless as it hardly did anything it was still something.

This card? crikey, there isn't even a game coming out. Bit pants really isn't it? I mean come on, they're benchmarking Far Cry 2 for crying out loud. And excuse my excitement that they benchmarked Aliens VS Predator because it was a crap game then and a crap game now.

Is this seriously, truly the best they can do before asking for £500?

So as I maintain. Once a console comes along that can do 1080p with 4XFSAA as a given I'm off. It's just becoming more and more insulting as the months pass.

At least then it can not only talk the talk, but have the actual games to be able to walk the walk.

*looks at thread*

Arguing again.

*leaves forum*

I seriously reckon all this arguing, fanboyism and debating could actually turn people away from threads and put them off commenting.

*posts and exits forum*

Hold on a sec, a forum is a place to debate things. No one is arguing as such just expressing different opinions. No one person is right or wrong and there is always going to people that disagree with other peoples opinion and have a different one to your own. Yes, sometimes people get a bit heated but no one means any bad by it and It would be a pretty boring discussion if everyone agreed with you on everything all the time.

Fanboism is a different story but then again there is always going to be fanboys of some kind but if you stick to facts then fanboys will eventually see sense, we can only hope anyway

Cool. That's your opinion dude. I enjoy a tonne of PC games. There are loads I haven't played yet and am looking forward to playing them.

Well without sounding like a wet blanket I played them all this year, and it was nothing but sequels to cash in on franchises.

So 'samey' were they that the only game that really got any of my time this year was Skyrim. And it took me 13 hours to work out that I'm not really into spells and dragons and stuff
laugh.gif

Still, at least it made a change, even if it too was a sequel

Other than that?

Dirt 3 - Dirt 2 with annoying crap added on.

Crysis 2 - Linear yawnfest.

Repeat ad nauseum.

Still, at least Obsidian are making a decent South Park game for next year. But you sure as eggs won't need a grand's worth of kit for that.

BTW. Feel free to LOL as much as I did. Can you say "Greedy"?

$850 for a GPU. That's a new one, made me LOL substantially. Nice to see that they're not taking advantage (yes I am being sarcastic)

If they think for one moment I am bailing them out of their Bulldozer fail then they can think again.

7890
blink.gif

That's a new card unless they got it wrong, should be 7870, or it's because of the 6930.

We have the 6850, 6870, 6950, 6970 and 6990 they are also releasing a 6930 though to go against the pointless Nvidia 560ti 448.

So it looks like they have thrown an extra card in the 7000 series, there hasn't been a X890 since the 4890 which was the flagship card back in 2009.

Nice to see their entry level card costs $359. That's the exact same price of the 6970 Lightning in the USA right now.

Looks like price hiking is their new game. I'm still LOLing at $849 for a 7990. That's a doozy !
