Socket Am2 review at THG

As usual with new platforms there is little point in upgrading straight away, but if you are building a new system from scratch then you can upgrade in the future once the performance gains start to show.

What it is though is more of a reason for AGP/Socket A users to upgrade, or budget users to go socket 939.

I dont quite follow.

If they are happy enough with their performance relative to current 939 DDR1 stuff then i think they are unlikely to move to something with the same performance, even if it is more future-proof.

I think Vista will be the big push for them to upgrade.

Re read the article guys, the performance witnessed by THG in that preview is based upon a AM2 CPU running on a 333 MHz bus with lax timings (non changeable because of the motherboard being an engineering sample) and the final product will be based on an 800 MHz bus with timing options.

The only major bonuses I can see are the fact that all of AMDs new processors are going to share a common socket which will be good for budget users wanting to upgrade, and the fact that with DDR2 there will finally be the option to run 4x DIMMswithout any major problems.

I did read that bit, i just think that the gains from even with the increased bus speed over the cost of a new CPU, RAM, motherboard and any mounting kit for AM2 for your chosen cooler are pretty small, so there is little point in upgrading now.

Many things could happen still between now and launch so i am open to changing my opinion, but i dont see the switch to AM2 as much more than a large expense with little gain atm.
