So I want a new keyboard...

Right guys, as the title says, I'm in the market for a new keyboard, as I've had this one since it was practically new (Logitech G15) and want a new one.

Requirements:

  • Under $100 USD
  • Includes numpad
  • Has a "game mode" or the like (i.e. button/switch that disables the Windows key)
  • Backlit (blue) [optional]
I realize the budget pretty much rules out mechanical keyboards, but as I've never had one and have gotten on fine for this long without one, I don't see the need. Unless you can thoroughly convince me why I need a mechanical switch keyboard, or can find one within my price range, I don't want/need it.

Thanks! I look forward to hearing (well, seeing) your suggestions. Cheers! :beerchug:

If that's the case then it fits every criteria :)

indeed :) i swear by this keyborad tho its really nice to use, the back lighting is immense and its shorter than most other keyboards (good for me with my tiny desk space)

the coolermaster quickfire tk i have one myself bub an its a wicked keyboard

As said above the CM Storm Quickfire TK Mechanical would just fit in your budget (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823129013)

It has everything, but the backlighting is red not blue :/

i have blue back lighting on mine buddy you can get green too i think

Thanks guys, I think I will go with the Quick Fire TK Blue. Amazon has it for $89 USD :cool:

I found out that the color of the backlight depends on the type of mech. switch in the board. Red=red (obv.), Blue=blue (obv.), and Brown=white light.

Yeah I don't get why they would limit it. I'd take the switch preference over the lighting colour as that will make a bigger impact.

Quick overview in case you didn't know.

Red = Non tactile, inaudible.
Brown = Tactile, inaudible.
Blue = Tactile, audible.

Blues are somewhat an acquired taste.

Ahh okay. Thanks for the overview as I didn't know there was that much of a difference. I looked up a video of typing on the 3 types of switches, and the blue doesn't sound that bad (as far as noise), but I think I will go with the brown switches, as from what I found, they sound like a normal (membrane switch, I think?) keyboard like I have now, but are still tactile.

Thanks again for the help :).

All mechanical keys sound a bit louder than membrane, but they produce a nice sound.

Since mech keyboards have become quite mainstream now, most PC hardware stores stock at least one keyboard in with each of these switches.
If you can I would advise seeking out a store and feeling them for yourself.

When I first ventured into mech keyboards stores vary rarely stocked them and it would have made my decision much easier if I could have tried them out for myself :)

Yeah, I would love to do that, but the problem is there are few to no electronics/computer stores in my immediate area. The closest one is a Best Buy about 45 mins. away, and I've only seen one mech keyboard there (Razer Black Widow). They probably have more, but since I've not bought a keyboard in around 5-6 years, I was never looking specifically for one. Next time I go I'll look and see what brands/switch types they have in the store and see if I can try them out. Thanks for the idea, though :).
