Snow Patrol

It seems they are not a very talented band then :(

Ah well I still like to listen to them and they seem to sell plenty of tracks

tim: i see what you are saying but its no the same, for a start the effects change on that intro to make it sound different, plus thats not the main sound anyway (unlike chasing cars riff)

if you wanna see a real bloc party riff, play helicopter

i agree that a song doesnt have to have a difficult to play riff to be good, but i think it does have to be slightly more imaginative that a 4 note alternate picking sort of thing.

some of the best riffs are simple to play and contain few notes (ala smoke on the water) but they are musically intelligent, something which snow patrol could never be.

PP: as far as chords go, most songs have only a few chords, its not the amount which is important, its the progression and the rhythm

like i said in a previous post, the "riff" doesnt need to be challenging, i think it works well and so do a crap load of other people.

Your more popular songs are only 3 or 4 chords at the max. Makes you wonder somtimes.
Some of the most catchy songs ever written were done so with very basic chord structures and lyrics etc. It's art! But, as long as people 'feel it', the formula works. Many 'artists' could take a leaf out of the simplistic song writing book occasionally. Hell, an awesome groove and hooky lyrics will win a lot of people over, that's why it's called popular music.

Trust me, my horizon of music is huge. Don't make me get a list of all the artists in my library. Sooo many different genre's.
