Smallest amount of RAM XP can use.

Howdy all,

Quick question...

My mate is planning on putting a small form pc in his car for music, gps, bluetooth and maybe something else. What is the lowest ram XP will consume with the OS stripped down and actually work.

Roughly....

i had an NlLITEnd version consuming 43MB bfore ... i dont even think it was running the audio daemon

mini ITX + Xubuntu/DamnSmallLinux/vectorLinux may be a better solution

Ya what it can`t find in physical memory, it`ll try and use virtual.

Think it has a fit if u have less than 64m during installation, but there`s ways around that I believe. I mean that is for a full XP install, so if u`r stripped I don`t see any reason not to go lower.

Whack in a 512 and should be fine.

Anything under you will start to feel the strain. ;)

Na man these lil P3's only have 128mb SD 133 in them at the mo but i've dug out a 256 stick which i'll give to him.. That should be enough for the basic stuff he wants it to do.

Just gotta find a decent guide on stripping it down now.

Never tried before.

43mb :D nice!

As for the better solution.. I expect it would be but he's already been given a couple small forms for nothing.. just needs to tinker a little.

What's wrong with the one I posted:

It's a "complete" guide no less.

Sorry mate, I didn't even see those 3 links.. All I saw was the first bit of the post.. Rushing at work ya see. Anyway thanks for those.. Its perfect and I shall pass them on to my mate as I can't be dealing with taking a serious read through them just now.. Had a quick browse but too much txt.

Thanks again all :beerchug:

You want to pput a PC in your car?

id ont no how well the HD will survive over speed bumps..

Its not me... Its my mate.

But yeah its the general idea... He'll just have to cushion it a bit I suppose and its not like he's in a hummer... He's got an MR2 so tends not to boot it over speed bumps so as not to rip the front off.
