That's actually pretty decent of them to put this amount of effort in to try and combat scalpers.
Here is a conspiracy thought, that from a corporation point of view could make sense.
Consider the global pandemic. People dont have money to burn.
Now consider the corporation with a new product they want to mass produce, but have no idea how much to produce without being stuck with surplus in the launch. And more offerings just around the corner.
Lets say Nvidia intentionally created demand with a ridiculous low quantity at launch, knowing these would instantly sell out. But also generate an incredible amount of pre orders. Straight away you have a guesstimate on how many to produce in the next run, selling just enough to cater for the masses, and not being stuck with a single GPU left over, all the time focusing on the next 3080 20gb sku.
Its a typical corporation manoeuvre so we can't really complain. The world going nuts is just a sign how impatient everyone is.

I can't see the savings in potential surplus being worth the hammering these companies take on the stock market when they do launches like this, it's not gonna please shareholders and is generally bad long term PR. As they highlight in their message, part of the issue with their launch came down to expensive rookie errors and lack of foresight, like not having any kind of meaningful human validation system to protect from bots, it's not a great look.
Even then, there's the customers, I know a lot of people who "ordered" 3080's from OCUK and such who are now getting indications cards might not be available for them until late October, and now the AMD rumours are flying around some are starting to question their original "purchase"/pre-order altogether.

This is a main part of the problem with anything like this, create artficial scarcity, let hype build among the masses, and watch the vast majority start screaming "I WANT IT!" thinking owning such an item would make them part of an exclusive/elite group, and clamouring over each other without a second thought of whether or not they actually NEED it.
I was fairly impressed with the 3080 reviews; would it outperform my Vega? Absolutely, it would trample all over it. But do I need one? No. If more people would hold back and think whether they actually do need something rather than outright going mad, it wouldn't be no where near as bad.

I'm not talking about manual workers (what I mean by that is builders and self employed people who genuinely work very hard) but most over paid office workers were sent to work at home, and so were the more wealthy.
As such they have no petrol to pay, no over priced lunches, no baby sitting fees and so on. Life all of a sudden became so much cheaper, and they are bored and have an excess of money building up.
You should have seen what happened to the BMX market (collector, not just usual bikes). Everything doubled in price overnight and was selling like hot cakes. TBH? I could have easily cashed in. Like anything else though I don't collect on worth I collect on what has sentimental value to me and thus it's not about profit.
I would imagine if we see another lockdown sales of material things will fly up again. As of right now they have begun to settle back a bit and the panic seems to have alleviated.
If you consider that the 3080 and above are luxury items this fits the demographic perfectly.
Personally? like, my opinion? they were not ready for the launch but wanted to beat the PS5 and big Navi so they rushed it, stock be damned. They just wanted to go first to make sure they were ahead.
IMO? pre ordering is out of order. It shouldn't even be legal, as most companies are taking the money at order, not when the product ships. So once again they are bending the rules of trading. That means all of that money sits there making interest whilst you are waiting.
I can't remember what Youtuber said it, but one did. Don't pre order anything. Not games, not GPUs, not anything. Ah yes, it was Steve @ GN.
That's the problem with life these days. People no longer seek real help for any issues they may have and instead have been encouraged to use retail therapy. Something which has proven to make matters worse in your life. You just end up in tons of debt and you find out you are no happier than before. It's a short term fix.
I mean FFS there are memes "Shut up and take my money". That's not even funny.
This generation are not prepared for a disaster. Something totally unavoidable like Covid. They have been raised to be too positive and too polite. They are ill prepared. When something truly bad does happen? they will fall apart. Sadly that is a by product of letting people think they are right all of the time. When something truly goes wrong? they can't handle it.
It's also why at the other end of the spectrum gangs are killing each other over drugs, which of course are all about money. Why? because they have to have the Iphone, the trainers and all of the things being drummed into their head that are critical that they cannot do without.
These are all of the by products of idealist capitalism.

I know a fair few people who tend to buy a lot of stuff fairly frequently, Stuff they really don't need, Nevermind the funds they haven't earned, And this pandemic has not slowed them down 1 iota.
Prime example is a guy that lives in my building, Has never worked and gets quite likely close to £2000 a month in welfare judging by the amount of really high end stuff that Amazon delivers almost daily, Zero wrong with him, And I mean zero, The worst he has is a bad attitude.
Not meant as a jab at anyone that does get benefits but this guy is a very real scrounger.

but at least I have the surplus funds for it (not that its a good excuse)I thankfully am happy that in my line of work, business has thrived far more than many others, seeing as telecommunication/internet has increased during isolation.

I can understand the excitement in a way. Its 2 years since the last major launch from the Green team, and so far the red teams GPU releases have been well priced, but mediocre at best.
We created the hype ourselves. I am the same, I have many things I have that I dont need. Such as 6 guitars when I only play one
I thankfully am happy that in my line of work, business has thrived far more than many others, seeing as telecommunication/internet has increased during isolation.

Building bikes is very meditative I found especially when I used to build mine up the night before friendly competitions, It was my zen zone ^_^

Yeah aside from the filthy hard work (wet sanding and grease) wrenching is indeed very relaxing.

My favourite feeling was riding the ramps after building, Rolling smooth up a volcano into a backflip and rolling down smoothly with the bearings all clicking nicely, Was a nice "I built this" moment ^_^
Try descending at 30kph over rocks, roots and making your own trails on a DH bike. Real nice thrill!
