SLI 560Ti 2GB edition with 1GB edition?

Hey there,

Should I come across some money in the next few months one of the options I'm looking at is a graphics card upgrade.

At the moment I have a GTX 560Ti HAWK which gets pretty darn hot if you don't put a 60FPS cap on games. And even then some games get it to rocket in temperature. To lighten the load and get improved performance in games such a s Battlefield 3 (my settings are quite medium, with extra special effects turned off, to keep my card silent).

I noticed that MSI has a TFII 2GB version of the GTX 560Ti for £20 or so more than the 1GB version. I know that SLI doesn't increase your memory (So a 1GB + 1GB doesn't give you 2GB of VRAM) but I thought, what if I SLI'd this 2GB one with a 1GB? Would I get 2GB of VRAM? Is it even possible?

So that's my first question.

Secondly, a GTX 670 would equate to around the same price spent on 2 GTX 560Ti's. Is it a better option? Bearing in mind I might not be able to claw back £150 fro my 560Ti HAWK.

i dont think you can SLI a 2gb card witha 1gb card even if they are both 560ti's
and i have a 670, they are well worth the money, max out battlefield easily

If you sli one 2gb card with one 1gb card you will only get 1gb as far as I know, as for a 670 well I think the performance would be better than 2 560's but you would definitely not be able to get £150 from selling a 560

Yeah but I was just saying that using Battlefield 3 as an example doesn't really show just how good the 670 is.

My suggestion would be to go for an HD 7950

Looks like my idea was indeed too good to be true then. Single cards are typically better, and you guys seem to have praise for the 670.

Overclocked the 7950 will give you roughly the same performance as a 670 and It is quite a bit cheaper

bout 20quid in it,
7950 is around te 270 mark and the 670 is around the 290 mark

Quite often the 7950 will go down to around £250 and that's with a good after market cooler where as the 670 will not go below £300 with a normal cooler

I've never seen a 7950 with an aftermarket cooler on that cheap. The cheapest I've seen is the ASUS on aria for 280, but I dont know

I have the 7950 with a reference cooler and I've been very impressed with that, other than the noise from the cooler, but performance is very good

they did plummet in price upon release of the kepler from nvidia, but as james says, now the prices are back upto about 265-275

On a non-statistical average I make it about £40 difference. That said, an overclocked 7950 only reaches the 670. An overclocked 670 according to reviews can skim a 680.

And we're looking at, say, £400 stock. £420 after-market. That's around £80 difference from the 670. I feel as though this is turning into an Nvidia vs AMD thread, but the 670 sounds like a cracking card.

I've tended to ignore the branding a bit. They're reference cards, so just made by AMD anyway so it isnt really worth paying the extra £15 just to get a brand like MSI, when you're paying for exactly the same thing. If it's factory overclocked though, thats when you avoid the dodgey brands
