More triple channel snakoilage methinks.
Basically no gpu has ever managed to hit the bandwidth wall of PCIE 2.0, yet they're now making something even faster lol.
Just like triple channel was never as good as it was made out to be. Not that it wasn't good, but note how Intel have done a U-ey and moved back to dual channel
There were many needless things on X58. In the early days SAS was one of them. I mean yeah it's great and all, but you seen the price of the drives? crikey !
It'll offer many new wonderful lovely things. How much use we can actually make of those things remains to be seen however. Yet you can rest assured we will be paying for them

I'd love to see a 1TB Revodrive on a pci-e 3.0 connection
yeah that would prolly cost a bizillion dollars to start with lol.
But I say DAMN the Torpedo's and build it already lol. As said many times before why wait if ya do by the time what ur waiting for releases there'll be another thing to wait for. Kinda why I opted to go SB instead of waiting for another disappointment from AMD with either another delay or as its looking performance being shite.

If they are delayed, and they will definately work on 1155 boards, then I might get a cheap 1155 chip and wait.
However, I have just read (on the Chris Angelini/Tom's Hardware twitter feed) that it'll only be boards with PCIe 3.0 support, which I haven't really seen on the market as yet. So keep an eye out for Z68 boards with "Ivy Bridge Ready" stickers.

You've also got to think how long will it take for 'decent' Ivybridge mobo's to be released... About the same time a higher clocked Ivybridge chip releases. I always give 6mths to new tech unless desperate. Will you run out of grunt on a 2500K/mobo combo within the next 12mths..? Doubt it

Ivy bridge is 1155 just like SB the Ivy CPUs will work in any 1155 motherboard with no performance decrease. The only difference with Ivy is that it has a PCI-E 3.0 controller so to make use of it you will need an 1155 mobo with PCI-E 3.0 but PCI-E 3.0 is backwards compatible with with PCI-E 2.0 which is why they will work in current 1155 mobos.
No doubt the new gen 3 mobs will be marketed as Ivy Bridge ready in bold letters on the boxes and in ads but it's just marketing they will work in all 1155 mobos.

It wouldn't surprise me if Nvidia, say, had the tech to do it soon. They won't though. They'll just keep letting new cards dribble out that slowly become better and better.
IB could be delayed due to the big mess up with SB. Or, they could be waiting for AMD to play their hand with Bulldozer? I would go for the former maybe? given that I'm sure they see BD as nothing to worry about.

Looking a tiny bit deeper, there doesn't appear to be any physical difference between 2.0 and 3.0, so could it be the case of a simple BIOS update?
As for waiting for the next big thing, this is my current position:
- Probably not bothering with Bulldozer, as there's only going to be one load of chips before they change socket AGAIN.
- Hoping Ivy Bridge is about before I build the rig at Christmas.
- If not, I'll get a decent 1155 board (probably Z68-UD7), whack a G620 in and run that until the Ivy chips turn up.

No BIOS update needed, they are 1155 socket exactly the same as SB. PCI-E 3.0 is backwards compatible with PCI-E 2 so they will work in PCI-E 2.0 boards the PCI-E controller will just run at PCI-E 2.0 levels, so it doesn't affect their ability to run on non Gen 3 mobos.
It's nice to see Intel not forcing a new socket for a change.

Wasn't it going to be socket 2011?
PCIE 3.0 apparently has more bandwidth on offer.
I guess the manus have simply ran out of ideas on how to make something sound uber exciting and screw you out of a buck
2011 is the Sandy Bridge-E (extreme) CPUs, Ivy Bridge is just 1155 Sandy Bridge but with a die shrink 22nm, a PCI-E 3.0 controller and Intel's new 3D transistors.
PCI-E 3.0 will have double the bandwidth of 2 but because it's backwards compatible with 2 the controller on the CPU won't prevent you from running them on a non PCI-E 3 mobo.
