Sanity Check

Hi OC3D.net!

Just need a sanity check. I'm building out a mITX server. After putting everything together, booted it up, got into BIOS and checked it out, even plugged in the management port so I can check out this KVM over IP business (real cool stuff). Anyway, as I was going through the BIOS I happened across the hardware monitor tab and glance to find the CPU temp at 80 degrees! So I was like, OK, not sure why. After a minute or two, it just kept going up to a little over 90 degrees. At that point I think "power button" so I turn it off. I let it cool off a bit and boot it up again, which no doubt results in the same situation.

I decide to re-seat the heatsink, which I do and it's not trivial as it's a tiny case and I've got to take the motherboard out. I re-applied the thermal paste and tried again. Booted it up and now seems steady between high 50's to low 60's (e.g. 58-64 degrees), which is weird to me (the temp delta), but whatever...I was just glad it wasn't skyrocketing like last time.

I really just wanted to make sure that the temps I'm seeing are normal for the type of fan I'm using. I've got on AIO on my rig and it hovers between high 30's to low 40's on idle, so, to me, 60ish is kinda high for idle, but what do I know. I have a suspicion that I perhaps used too much thermal paste when I first applied it. I used a pea sized amount (more of an oversized pea) the first time, the second time, I used a rice grain amount. Would this have any affect to what I saw initially?

Here's my specs:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3 1275 V3
Motherboard: ASRock E3C226D2I
Memory: Kingston KVR16E11/8 DDR-1600 8GB ECC
Cooling: Dynatron K199 80mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste: Arctic Silver 5
Case: M350 Universal Mini-ITX enclosure
PSU: PicoPSU 150-XT

Thanks!

Hi Upinesay,

Yup too much thermal paste can in fact cause all kind of problems,
I'm pleased you saw that and sorted it. :D
