It looks like Samsung has been building a GPU, but will they be able to compete with the likes of Intel and AMD?

Cheers Dicehunter for linking me to this!

Would be awesome in the mobile market :) maybe they could do ok but against 2 well established companies and obv intel but it maybe hard to get their fingers into the door but also a big company like samsung with the clout could maybe give nvidia and amd at least a run for their money.

Very interesting! Bit of competition is always good and I have no doubt in my mind that the power house that is Samsung will be able to create a beast for the mobile market.

So anyone know whether these will be TSMC or homemade by Samsung? Could be rather interesting, Samsung seems to want their own version of everything now haha, even made their own processors, OS etc etc.

its good business really, they don't have to pay anyone else all they have to pay for is the making of the item. and still charge you the same rates meaning more profit.

Great, this is all we need, while it's good for the companies' bottom line it has the potential to be very bad for the consumer as quality is allowed to drop to increase profits since the sales of the gpu are guaranteed and the loss of quality there can be absorbed down the line in the final product. I will not be buying any Samsung products that have their own gpu.
Samsung does some things very well, but let's face it some of their products are horrible (looking at you microwave with controls at the bottom of the door).

Vertical integration is always a two edged sword.

And the fact their TV's have their own panel used by many others ... most of the apple products were manufactured by samsung or their connections ... and apple are apparently the best ... If you only have your self to blame for a product that will affect your reputation then you work hard to not mess up.

I personally would love to buy a phone thats 100% samsung cept maybe the OS ... lol i like my android lol

(Apples) Hardware itself is not typically manufactured by Apple, but is outsourced to contract manufacturers such as Foxconn or Pegatron who build Apple's branded products to Apple's specifications.
Apple is not the best, they do some things well, but are by far not the best. My android outdoes my friends iPhone in picture taking and call quality, the rest I haven't compared, but those are the 2 things done most often with a cell. He was trying to take a picture of some kegs of toner on a press and couldn't get a decent shot, so I snapped one and he was very impressed and used it to send to the manufacturer with an inquiry as to the product number discrepancies he noticed.

Brilliant news.

Samsung don't f**k about when it comes to going for the throats of the best of the competition. Sony got properly humped by them in the TV market.

Just what the GPU market needs I reckon, a bit of competition to shake it up. I am very disappointed to hear that Nvidia will be bringing out 9-series cards that are basically no faster than the 780Ti. Now if we could persuade Samsung to start making x86 CPUs as well, maybe Intel would get their butts in gear and actually bring stuff out on time, and with more than a 4/5% IPC improvement...

i think the 980 is a massive step forward, sometimes innovation needs to be something other than RAW power, the fact they get similar performance using alot less power means you get much better overall performance, plus the price will be similar to the existing cards so it means they will generate some of their lost money in research so the next lot of cards will be super fast and efficient!

And at the moment when it comes to general silicon processors they are limited by the size of the micro circuits and transistors inside. Unless this graphene circuit systems work out.
