i have just bought a new ssd from amazon, the non pro samsung 840 250gb. i know that the pro has better performance, but when the pro was almost £200 and the oine i ordered is only £130, have i made a mistake or will this be decent? better than my 60gb vertex2 anyways

ok. ssd in use now. speed not quite as fast as my old vertex. windows reports it as 5.9 primary speed. where as the vertex 2 was over 7, not the end of the world. at least this one is big enough for most of my games so i can benefit from ssd response times more often

Im surprised it's slower than the vertex?

can you rebench using crystal disk on the old one and the new one?

i have not got the vertex wired up atm, but here is the bench for the 840

silly question incoming (gotta cover all bases)... is it on a 6GB/s port and cable?

The standard 840's should be around double some of those numbers I believe?

erm, i dont know... im using the black ports on my z68 extreme 3 gen 3, ill have to dig out a manual to check

EDIT: just checked the manual on website. silly me, its on a sata2 port... oops, been in queue for ea customer support for the last 2 hours, once this is resolved i shall change the lead to the other port.

Might be worth a look, I believe your read speeds should be higher, this is my Pro main drive

just looked some other reviews and they agree with you, reads should be 500ish.
i will find out soon i hope, when i do i will re-post bench results

plugged it into a 6gbps port...
it turns out that i was always running the vertex2 on 3gbps also... DOH!

EDIT: re-ran the windows assessment, and its now 7.9 for ssd. phew

Excellent :) I didn't think that seemed right!

Glad you sorted it mate! (see sometimes the 'is it plugged in' question does work! hehe)

yeh. thanks for making me feel like an idiot.... (just kidding)
but my thoughts are you gotta make mistakes to learn what to keep an eye in in future
