RX 480 + Ryzen 1700X Stuttering

Hi everyone

Recently, I've built a new machine running a Ryzen 1700X and an XFX RX 480 GTR (non Black Edition) and I've been getting constant stuttering when doing any form of gaming on it, even if I have an FPS of over 200. It runs smooth for a second or two, stutters and then repeats which as you can imagine is absolutely infuriating.

I've done a re-seat in the PCIe slot, changed slow, running the newest motherboard BIOS, checked the PSU cables, different outputs etc and no luck. The only thing I've had luck with is rolling back to the 16.12.2 driver which hasn't stopped the stuttering, but has made it not as bad.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Or have I got a "soon to be" dead card?

UPDATE

Fixed (thank you SPS) it was actually F.Lux causing it, enabled Safe Mode on f.lux has fixed it as well as obviously disabling or removing it

Have you OCed your GPU, CPU or RAM? When I OCed my Black edition and CPU I did start to stutter too.

TBH it just sounds like a bad OS install or even a game install

Nope, with how buggy the BIOS is I don't dare to right now. I've got my CPU and GPU are running factory clocks and RAM is running at 2666MHz as 3200MHz just makes it bootloop during POST

TBH it just sounds like a bad OS install or even a game install

Tried reinstalling Windows a couple of times and redownloaded the games and drivers each time as well but still no change.

I wish it was something that simple though, I'd absolutely hate to have to RMA anything or worse, sell this off and get an Nvidia card again

Did you use DDU to uninstall?
I'd try updating the BIOS too. It may help. If that doesn't then it's probably a bad driver or something with the card

Already running the newest BIOS for my motherboard mate, that's the first thing I did when I first built it.

Aye, always use DDU whenever doing a driver change. I'm gonna do some more driver rolling to see if that sorts anything, if not I'll most likely see if I can throw it in another machine to see whether it works fine in there

Hmm interesting. I am using an OC'd intel CPU and a 480 with the newest drivers and no issues, so since you are on a fresh OS install, I would say it is probably a hardware issue or BIOS bug? May have to wait for the next bios to have the newest AEGSA(or whatever the acronym is!) from AMD to get it sorted.

If you don't want to wait for that then an RMA is what I would do, I don't know much else to solve this one:/

That's fine mate, thanks for helping though, really appreciate it, you too Reloaded

Have you tried using a different GPU?

Not yet, I do have my partner's RX 460 waiting to go in her machine which will probably be detoured into mine first, I'll probably throw my 480 in hers when that's running and see what happens on both systems.

Is Windows updating? I get this whenever I do a new build. Turns out Windows is churning away in the background causing stutter. Also check your power settings.

Fully updated, I installed from a fresh ISO created with the Media Creation Tool, power settings have been set to High Performance with all low power settings disabled.

Will try a fresh install of 7 or 8 as well to see if anything happens, I know they aren't officially supported on Ryzen but hell, I'll give it a go

Well I've done fresh Windows, BIOS update and everything, problem is still there :(
I've attached a screenshot of my Metro benchmark run, and I won't lie I'm geuinely annoyed with it, I'm gonna try to get hold of an Nvidia card and see if that works fine

No one else seems to be having this issue, and you've done everything you can to fix, so it must be a faulty component that's not accepting a driver. Like you said, try a different graphics card. If that doesn't work I'd consider asking for a warranty repair on the new CPU.

Is the RAID array still working OK?

Well, I've rolled back to 16.12.2 and that seems to have mostly fixed it again. I'm going to run my RX480 in my partner's machine on fresh Windows to definitively rule it out. I would like to test an Nvidia card in it but I know no-one who can just lend me a card for the day to see. I absolutely don't want to RMA my motherboard but looks like I may have to.

RAID array? That's fine, I'm having to run software RAID through Windows because the RAID mode and drivers are absolutely terrible, half my software wouldn't work, including Corsair Link, CPU-Z and Speccy

Have you checked your fan speed, at idle and while gaming. I found the last two drivers set my Fury fans at 792RPM at idle. After 30 minutes, I would artifact, and the card would throttle. It was only letting the fans spin up to 1900RPM. That's where it normally idles stock. I had to revert back to the February WQHL driver.

Forgot to mention, it only because I opened Wattman.

Maybe the RAID configuration was causing issues. I don't know much about RAID so I don't know. Just shooting in the blind. :)

That's fine mate thanks anyway :)

Tried all of WattMan's setting pretty much, Fans, Power Limit, GPU Speed etc. But still the FPS drops are there. I've tried every Driver between the 16.12.2 to the 17.4.2 and the latest one that works is WHQL 17.1.2. Every driver after that has the FPS drops.

On another note, I've ran it in my partners PC (A8 6600K) and it works fine on any driver so I know it's not the card thankfully) Since it works okay at the moment I'll give it some time for more BIOS/Chipset drivers to see if that fixes anything soon.

Thanks anyway though mate :)

I'd check latencymon check it's not a dodgy driver conflict.

I haven't done this but just want to say, dude THANK YOU. :D

I read your post and immediately thought about any conflicting background processes and decided to boot with everything disabled and the newest driver now works perfectly! Just finished more testing and it turns out F.Lux is causing it, a problem I've never had before so it never crossed my mind.

Thank you everyone for helping, really do appeciate it and respect to all of you :)
