Router Brands - Who's hot?

So then, who makes good routers? i'm in the market for a wireless adsl modem/router - not too fussed about features but i do want something that won't crash every few hours.

Cheap would be nice too but it's not often that bargain and reliable go hand in hand. Just want something i can set up and then forget it exists. The wired modem/router i have at the moment dies on a daily basis and is really getting on my nerves.

Oh noise drives me insane too so any router that makes any at all is instantly a write-off.

Thanks in advance for any help, i'm fairly well versed in other areas of nerd stuff but am pretty clueless about networking.

Thompson/Alcatel, Zyxel, USR, Netgear are all great makes.

I've had a Zyxel router running for over a year without a reboot.

Netgear I wouldn't touch with a long stick, even though I currently have one. The best make I've used are Westell, but I don't know if they do wireless.

Edit : - Looking at their website, www.westell.com they do wireless ones, so are definitely worth a look, although the one I have is a Proline 6100, which is not wireless.

I have a Belkin 802/11g router.

It's not the fastest or the best featured out there but it works fine and the wireless range seems pretty good.

What sold it to me was the freephone telephone support and a lifetime warranty.

Every Netgear I've had has been a huge POS, I don't recommend them though most people love the company.

I run all Linksys equipment and I couldn't be happier.

I can recommend the 3Com ADSL/Wireless router from Amazon here

Good price, and includes a free PCMCIA Wireless network card

I have one and its worked flawlessly for the 6 months I've had it. (using the latest firmware) .

hmm the opposite for me Frag, every Linksys I have owned was a POS and broke before 1 month.

I have a Netgear rangemax and it is outstanding and has unbelievable range

Rofl u bought an SRX setup and loved it :p

I bought a Belkin Pre-N router just a few weeks ago, and apart from a few IP problems with the internet (that turned out to be the ISP giving us the wrong details!) I've had no problems so far, and the range is amazing with just a standard g network card... can get most of the way up the street before there's any problems (and our house has thick walls and a lot of interference).

I had a Thomson Speedtouch which gave up the ghost, so I decided to go buy the cheapest wireless router I could buy. Didn't see the point in paying a premium on something that will probably go the same way as the Speedtouch.

Got a Dynamode model and so far it's been no problem. It's hammered 24/7 with about 5 PCs going though it.

What a mine field it all is, I've been away on holiday over Christmas and the place I'm staying have Orange broadband which they kindly offered me the Wep key so I could use it on my laptop, well it's been the muppet show here, I know less than nothing about networking so I went to the local PC world for advice well to start they said my laptop wouldn't connect to the live box so to use a usb stick after looking at their offers I decided to buy a Linkseys kit which didn't connect so back to swap for Belkin, didn't connect then D link didn't connect.

I gave in and thought maybe it's something to do with my Dell laptop so I bought a Packard Bell core 2 duo on Christmas eve and gave it to my wife for Xmas thinking that'll do the job, guess what it doesn't connect.

So I bought a Netgear kit and it doesn't connect, then I went into the live box and took off the encription and bang it connects, I was actually using the correct Wep key and it could see the Livebox but not connect, great I thought so I did the same with the wifes new Packard Bell and no way will it connect even with encryption off, so we gave in and bought a Belkin and scrapped the Live box now everything works fine.

So I've had pretty much everything this last week and most wouldn't work over the distance from out caravan to the house but Netgear and Belkin gave the best range the Linksys was way behind not in the same league.

I've had a good time trying things learnt a bit and PC world are over £1000 better off, maybe it would have been cheaper to buy a 3G card but I'll leave that for my next adventure:)

No wonder why networking experts earn good money they deserve it.

I'm using a nice Dlink 2XR Super MIMO Wreless Super G 108G router, very stable, great signal, quick, and I only paid 55 bucks 8)
