Rick's Rig

Heya guys!

Desk/ work area thread:
http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=59560

This is my current rig. I does most things I need it for pretty well, but I'm looking to sell it as I'm planning a smaller sized build in a 350D and unfortunately I can't afford both. Oh well, seems like this one will stay for a while anyway

I was really bored today and decided that it was time to give my rig a spring clean. Opened the thing up and noticed that a lot of dust had built up.
Aaaaaaaaa
....
...wait for it...
...
CHOOOOOOOOOOO

Cleaned out the dust filters, vacuum cleaned my CPU heatsink and blew the dust out of the fans. Decided that it was time for some changes as well. First of all the cable management, second was to throw in an SSD I had laying around and lastly I wanted to change my fan layout.

Sadly, I don't have pics from before cleaning. I tried taking pictures with a fancy camera but the pictures aren't that sharp at all. Oh well, this will have to do :)

Rig specs:
- i5 3570k @ Stock currently
- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
- ASRock Z68 Fatal1ty Professional Gen3
- Corsair Vengeance Red 1600 MHz CL8
- EVGA GTX 670 FTW
- CM Storm Trooper
- Nexus RX-1k (Wayyyy too much power, but oh well)

Must admit that cable management could be loads better but it looks good at the front and that's all that matters :)

Things I know I'm going to get comments on:

- Ew, OCZ SSD
Yeah, I bought it before I visited this forum :p Had it for a year now and it's still going so I don't mind *knocks on wood*

- THAT POWER SUPPLY!
It's a Nexus unit, the RX-1k. It's semi modular and rated 1000 Watts. Yes, I know that's way overkill. Or at least I do now... Anyway, the reviews were pretty good and since Nexus specialises in 'Quiet Computing' you don't hear it at all. They didn't have it 80+ rated to keep the cost down, but it's bigger brother, the RX-1.1k is 80+ Gold and they're pretty much the same, except for the wattage. :)

- BUT IT'S UPSIDE DOWN!
Yeah, the 24 Pin cable is too short to mount it fanside up :(

- You have no rear fan...
Yeah, I still have the 200mm in the top though. Trying to get positive air pressure. Since I mounted the CPU cooler in pull, that will push the air out the back anyway.

- ERMAGHERD OPTICAL BAY.
I used to watch movies on my PC a lot, now I have a TV in my room. :)

Btw; The reason that I bought the ASRock board is because I got a really good deal on it. Was kind of a nobrainer for me as the reviews were actually really good, it was black & red and it offered all the features I needed. I saw no reason not to :)

Thanks for readin/watching guys! Let me know what you think, I'm open to constructive criticism!

Ninja cable management!! That's a peculiar PSU alright at least you gave an explanation :P Dust filter would be an idea with the airflow set up like that. Lovely rig overall fair dos to ya :)

Not many people are familiar with Nexus, they're a small brand (I think from the Netherlands). But every single product by them that I have owned is a good quality for a fair price, so I'm a fan of them :)

The front covers are actually dust filtered, but dust still enter through the gaps between the covers. Hope I've fixed it by creating more of a positive air pressure now. Maybe I should just clean the room more often

Thanks mate :)

Not really much to criticise tbh!
It looks really good - cables are really tidy.

The OCZ SSDs that fail tend to fail within 3 months or so, so if you've had it a year it should be alright.

I would recommend another fan on the back tbh. The CPU cooler fan will draw air towards the back, but without a fan, a lot of that heat will be dispersed. It isn't like you'll have a massively negative pressure with the fan there, so you should be fine really.

Thanks! :D

I'll think about the fan thing. My CPU temps have gone up with 2-3 degrees but tbh, I don't think it's that bad. The stock rear fan was kind of noisy though, so if I do put a fan there I'll buy a new one. I know they're not that expensive but I don't feel like spending money on this rig right now as I don't have it and for the reason mentioned in the beginning of the OP :p

Get a 5v cable and pretty much every fan will be near silent.
You don't need anything powerful really, just something to guide the heat out of the case.

CPU temps may have gone up slightly, but the motherboard temps may have risen more without you really knowing. Always good to have some form of airflow being guided out the back of the case.

Thanks for the info! I'll look into getting one of them cables then :p
Put it for sale on a tech site today though, if someone wants it I'll just put the stock fan back in ;)

Nice rig mate! I properly like it :)
Only thing I think is that the CPU Heatsink still looks a bit dusty. But other than that it looks great IMO!
I like what you've done with the green on the GPU too :D

Thanks! :D

I tried to blow it out, vacuum cleaned it and tried everything I could think of (except water as I kept it attached to the board through the clean-up process so that wouldn't have ended well )

Most of the dust is actually out, it's just like the colour on the fins have changed. Doesn't matter much, it still cools well! :)

my 200mm is missing a few blades after a screwdriver fell into it, and i think you shoud use my ghetto ssd mounting solution, whilst mine isnt very clean is a talking point

Doesn't matter too much, the stock case fans are a bit noisy imo.
My SSD isn't really mounted beautifully either but it's stuck in place, snug between the cables and out of sight where I don't see it.

nice rig, =D

I love that Cablemanagment xD looks like it should haha

Thanks mate, took some time to do but I love a clean rig with barely any cables visible. So worth it!
Maybe I should tidy up the back of the motherboard tray a bit when I can be bothered to

Nice rig you've got yourself there. A smaller case for that, would look nicer, I think.
If I were you, I would find somewhere to mount that SSD, just for the looks.

You're right! I bought this case with the idea that I would some day go SLI and/or watercooling. Right now I am looking to downsize to an ITX rig (Bitfenix Phenom).
