Back in 2007 Cooler Master launched the CM 690 to the public, system builders and modders. Even today it is still a popular case in the pc community. The CM690 has only just been improved, the interior has been changed from a dull grey to a cool black. Now in 2010 Cooler Master have launched the CM 690 II case. There is a total of four cases, the CM690 II Regular and the CM 690 II Advanced and both of these have a windowed version. The one that I purchased is the CM 690 II Advanced, which will replace an original CM 690.
Packaging
The packaging of the CM 690 II is made up a very strong cardboard box,the case is inside a large thick plastic bag, then large pieces of white polystrene is fitted on the front and rear of the case. The case doesnt move when in the box, very well protected. The outside of the box contains photos of the case and specifications of the case. The box is mostly black compared to the CM690 box which was white with pink banding top and bottom.
First impressions.
The weight of the case is 9.56kg or 21 lbs for us oldies. The case itself is made up of steel, plastic and steel mesh. The case sits on four large rubber feet which look nearly the same as the original CM 690 feet. The case sits about 13mm or 1/2 inch off the ground, this allows for plenty of space for air to circulate under it. The sides are held in position with small metal tabs and 2 small black thumb screws. athe sides are very tight fitting, but do have a small amount of flex when they are off the case. One side has two vertically in-line positions for 140 mm fans or even small if you wished to fit them. The other side has a position for a 80x15mm fan for cooling the back of the CPU. The front has only 4 5.25" expansion bays, the power and reset buttons have been moved from the front side to the top panel, this makes it a lot easier to switch the pc on when the case is on the floor. The front panel hides a 140mm LED fan which can be positioned in two places.
The rear panel has a120mm fan fitted, standard I/O slot,2 rubber grommeted holes for WC pipes, bottom aperture for the PSU but the rear panel has an added feature which is an additional bay slot which is parallel to the side. The top panel has the power, reset and on/off button for the front 140mm fan,to go with this is 2 USB sockets and a E-SATA socket. Also on top is the "X-Dock" where a SSD or a SATA hard drive can be slotted in and be used.
The top panel also covers the positions for 2 140mm fans of which one is already fitted, also a 240mm rad can be fitted in this position too. With sides off the interior is fully exposed,a matt black paint interior the only part which lets the interior down is the unbraided cables. This can be easierly sorted in a few hours. Both SATA cables can be removed so swapping to another colour is no problem. The 3.5" bays have quick release handles and so do the 5.25" bays.
