Resolution missing - Need DVI?

Hey again

Whether its the latest nvidia drivers or something or just the VGA cable, my 8800gt has stopped allowing 1680x1050 resolution forcing me to set it as a custom resolution in nvidia control panel.

I have heard that going to DVI (again - i stole the DVI cable i used to use for my ps3!) will solve it. Now whilst browsing the net for a DVI cable, I've noticed there is standard DVI cable...and dual link.

Will dual link be a good thing? I mean its only a dell 2007wfp (20.1") but will it allow upgrades to say 24"+ later on??

Not quite sure on the best buy for a dvi either

Dual link is just so you can run 2 monitors. Kinda like just a port extension, which the splitter would then plug into.

Not a bad thing to have. But not 100% necessary.

Na.. dual link cables allow higher data transfer rates. I was looking at the difference between the two the other day. For resolutions above something like 2048x1536 you need a dual link DVI cable.

You're right but at 1680x1050 you would be fine with single link. Easiest way to check is amount and layout of the pins on your monitor to see what is compatible or read the manual if you have it.

il just go with single for now then as a newer monitor is bound to come with its own

I bought a dual link off ebay for like 5 quid from America.. It turned up in 4 working days and is perfect really. No issues at all on quality.

If your monitor has the pin layout of dual link then it will more than likely be compatible with the monitor.

Edit: Just checked here and your monitor will take a dual link cable (24 pin).
