Researching for a Motherboard and CPU combo

Hello all!

You have been so very supportive and helpful in my quest for a new GPU...

So, I thought I'd ask about this one.

I want ASUS brand (looking at the P8Z77-Deluxe) but I'm wondering what I should think about in terms of "future-proofing", should I go for a newer socket than the 1155? newer chipset than Z77? Have they been out long enough to be nearing EOL?

I'd love to hear from your knowledge on the subject.

As for a CPU, Sandy or Ivy bridge, haven't decided, i5/i7 on the fence... Will likely be going to a VM farm with 32 GB mem for sandboxing and a multi screen environment (2/maybe 3) in the future.

P.S. This is a purchase I will be postponing for a couple months, so that should be considered, in case there are any scheduled press releases from Intel/ Asus, etc.
 
There's no such thing as "Future Proofing" really. New Technology is always around the corner. Take the people in February who just paid £1000 for the Titan, only to be told that Nvidia are soon releasing a better card. (< I know that's not a CPU, but it's the same principle). We all know that Haswell will be released in a couple months, but it will only be around 10% over IB. And probably be quite expensive, being a new product etc.. And as for your question, IB over SB. Unless you want the SBE, I personally don't know why somebody would buy SB over IB.

And even in a couple of months, it's not like an IB i5 3330/3570k (Or whichever one you chose) + Z77 will be outdated. If I was you, when you do have the available funds, an IB i5-3570k + Z77 will still be pretty decent.

As for your last question, probably. I haven't done my weekly search but I'm sure somebody somewhere have got some new stuff on the line, but I doubt it should be anything to consider, I remain with what I said above. And can I ask why you specifically want Asus?

You're better off saving money and going with MSI for the motherboard really.
I've got the P8Z77-v Deluxe, and it's a great board, don't get me wrong - but you're basically paying for unnecessary features that you'll never actually use.

Go for the MSI Z77 mPower with a 3770k - or wait for Haswell.

I like the idea of easy OC and visual BIOS, that's why ASUS

Dude, pretty much every board has that these days.
The MSI will give you probably better performance than the Asus and save you about £50/60 too.

There's nothing at all wrong with the Asus. It's a great board, and I've not had any problems at all with mine. But it's expensive due to the features like wifi, and all the software that comes with that that you'll never actually use - and even if you do, the wifi on it is pretty terrible anyway.

Haha! The Wifi / Bluetooth integrated were part of the selling points for me, lol

Lol, that's why I bought mine.

I've never used bluetooth on it.
I did use wifi for about a month, but wifi on desktops is never any good. The signal often drops out. Even if you did get the Asus, I'd still strongly recommend you get a set of powerline adapters or something anyway. And if you're drawn in by the features like streaming your desktop over wifi to your iPad or something like that, then seriously give it a miss, cause you'll be disappointed when it just doesn't work at all.
