Render Farms/Render Servers

what dug says.. for 1k you shouldnt be looking at dual cpu systems. get a 3930k 32gb of ram, a boot ssd and a cheap gpu. I'll trow sth together quickly brb

edit: looks like 2011 will be tight, but it's doable.

my advise would be to get a 99fxa-ud3 with a fx 8150 as prices went down a lot and it's almost as powerful as an i7. just get the cheapest 16 or 32 gb ram, cheap case and something like a cx600 or if you want intel get a p67 board and a 2600k.

from what i think you don't really need massive power

edit2:

here's a list of parts: only 410, didn't choose a gpu since i've read you got a 5450 and u'll only be rendering.

I suggest you learn a bit on pc hardware and terminology first before you make a site and everything. Your enthousiasm is great, but you got to learn first.

Yeah you need to make sure you have a really high quality main machine before getting any servers. I've been wanting to do it for ages, only just managed to come up with enough money to do it.

I've got a 3930k in my main machine. Then have 2 render servers with 2500k. The motherboards are just sticky taped to a av rack

. CPU, mobo, ram, psu (and an ssd cos I had them lying about). But these cost me about £280 each. Until you are a proffesonal company, going dual xeons etc can be difficult.. In your situation (like me) get a nice main machine and get some nice bang for buck machines to help out!

Great enthusiasm though!

I'm not trying to crush dreams or anything here and your enthusiasm is brilliant but that isn't by any stretch of the imagination a rendering machine.

You're looking at 2 single core processors possibly 2 dual core processors based on 90nm tech at best circa 2005-7.

I've got a Dell T5400 sat on my desk at work which is running a pair of quad core E5's and it takes 20 minutes to open a pre-rendered cad file, for comparison my I7 opens it in 2 and my QX6850 opens it in 7.

I'm not saying don't waste your time at all, but I would be prepared for less than stellar performance with the hardware you've got.

And don't try pairing DDR3 memory with that motherboard it's a DDR Standard motherboard it'll physically not fit. It may even require ECC RAM as is the case with a large proportion of Workstation systems. I wouldn't change the PSU either as if IBM/LENOVO are anything like DELL/HP/FUJITSU then the PSU will be a fairly reasonable manufacturer anyway. It's also not unheard of for manufacturers to make proprietary connectors for their systems rendering your ATX Standard PSU useless.

Cheers

Thanks but Im not getting it any more but i dont think they are single core cpus, and you can get quad core ones of ebay for about £10 each and that information is very helpfull.. I just like to do builds for the fun of it also and tbh it would be much better than the dual core pentium im running just now.

That server only supported certain issues of the Opteron core, from the quick look I had last night that was upto and including dual core. There wasn't any Quad core support on the motherboard. I've no doubt you can get them for little money, but they're pretty pointless if you don't have the board to fit them too.

Thanks, good advice

Im getting similar parts to that for my own rig so i will just use that
