Remove the IHS or lap it?

I dont feel like cracking my core if all im gonna get is a 3 dgree drop xD so would just lapping the IHS be as efficient or should I just go in head first and remove the IHS?
 
i never have removed the IHS, h/e if you already oc'ed ur cpu, y not void warranty on the cpu even more... so at least lap the sucker... takes around 3hrs for a real good lap but does bring temps down 2-4c at least.
 
if ur going to lap it , might as well take the ihs off. That way if u you do a clean job about it , you can actually seal the ihs back if u ever wanna RMA ur product ( not that I would recommend it , since you are effectively voiding ur warranty by overclocking but to each his own ) . If you want to lap the ihs , then I would say , pop the ihs off , lap only the ihs , clean the core and base of the ihs nicely and apply a fine layer of AS5 or Ceramique ( ceramique preferred since its safer ) and put superglue on all four corners and put the ihs back on. Put some weight on the proc with the IHS on and soon you will have about the same temps ( maybe 1 ~ 2 C more ) than a proc without IHS but it will save u running the risk of damaging ur proc with a clamp-type HSF.
 
I vote to pop the top... Your processor will be happy you did once it feel it's new found cool running self :)

I was able to gain an extra 200mhz stable on my second core with the Opty 180 after popping the top.

sorry to hijack but ive been thinking of this too.

would it be ok to pop the ihs and put an xp-120+ panaflow or is it too big?

I was scared to death the first time that I popped the top off of my 170. Just take your time and be careful. I noticed about a 4-5c drop at the same settings and also gained about 200mhz as Fragtek has said.
 
If you want to use XP120 with ur proc , I would highly suggest lapping the base and removing the nickel till u see complete copper. After that remove ur IHS , lap it separately ( much easier to do when its not attached to ur proc and safer as well ) and then clear the stock goop off the proc and ihs , apply some good thermalpaste like AS5 or Ceramique and attach the IHS back on. You will be amazed by the results. AMD's Ihs is really good , much much better than Intels , but the nickel plating on the top hinders a good heat dissipation. So if you get rid of the nickel , the heat dissipation will be more efficient since it will be copper to copper and it will have more area to dissipate heat. If you are using IHS-less proc , then any screw down style hsf is recommended. Like Bigtyphoon or Scythe Ninja seem to be really good options.

what sort of temp decrease are talking about if i lapped both dude?

Noooo!! Power sander will ruin it mate. You have to keep the surface completely flat.

Get yourself a nice little square piece of glass and about 8 different grits of sandpaper from super rough to super fine. Then start with the roughest and a dab of water and start to work your way down to the super fine where you should end up with a perfectly flat surface and a mirror finish.

you can easily see about a 5C drop if u lap it right and the thermal paste settles and makes a good contact. Check out my lapped 805D in the intel section. I did that yesterday after a trip to the auto store for the lapping paper. Half an hour and a nice smooth flat surface for optimal heat transfer. :D
