I don't "Think" it's legal, i know it is. And yes the software needed to even attempt an install is infact illegal to distribute, but using it is not.

*I don't know if the above statements applies to the UK, or anywhere else than Denmark. :)

You do realize most of the time enthusiast software works better than the large company software? Enthusiast software is driven by passion and the want for something useful... software from large companies are driven by profit and prices bloated by advertisement... If I have the choice between enthusiast software and big business software and they compare at all I will always go for the enthusiast software...

I'm happy to use enthusiast software...but that isnt what this argument is about. I think the OS is more of a crucial part of the system to allow it to not be made by a large company. IMO - Windows is good - with everything I need on it. I dont need to hack it to make it work, and I can get basically any piece of software to do whatever I want - and, it's compatible with my system straight away.
The hackintosh software was 'edited' by an enthusiast to add support for AMD, different motherboards and processors etc... We all know how many issues people have when running drivers - even when those drivers are made by say AMD and nvidia. Now I cant honestly see that an enthusiast would be able to make drivers for graphics cards to run as well on a mac as they can on Windows with the proper drivers. I just personally see it causing far too much instability, and incompatibility to warrant me using it on my own PC.

Like I've said - I have no complaints if people want to, and wish you the best of luck in doing it, and hope you enjoy it... But I dont want to be using it myself.
 
oh addendum to the above.
windows 8 will be an apple style walled garden, in so far as to even prevent gaming.
steams boss the guy behind minecraft and others are up in arms over M$ latest shenanigans

This is good! Finally games can make the transition to Linux!
 
Just an annoying OS tbh a lot of little annoying nuisances biggest one has to be the fact its impossibruuu to go to desktop when gaming...

Will never happen as linux isn't "user friendly" enough for the average user.
And because there is really only a small amount of us who really know how and want to use it, it will never happen.

I also wish it would, but. It never will.

The largest hurdle to using Linux as a desktop is 3rd party software. A distro with a gui is just as easy as Windows. With steam on Linux and a few supported valve titles, that's one huge step towards more adoption in the mainstream. More importantly it's an incentive for other devs on Steam to get their games working on Linux as well.

Now if only OEM's offered Linux as an alternative install....
 
If i could use all my games on ubuntu i would only use that. far prefer the interface to windows 7. I'll just have to wait and hope :(
 
I'm having issues with skype and iTunes...

Both run terribly in Windows 8.

When I shut down the computer, both crash and give me errors, making me have to click 'ok' to force the shut down. And they just run incredibly buggy.

Skype especially always crashes - but it's still better than the app....

It's incredibly annoying for me as the only programs I really even use are chrome, iTunes, Skype and Windows Live Mail....
Obviously not including games there - but I'm barely gaming anymore :(

Just disappointing considering Microsoft owns Skype now - you'd have thought they'd have at least addressed compatibility to their own programs.

I'm not having any huge issues with Win8. I've been running it since launch and vanilla, it completely sucks. However, after installing Start8 and doing a couple other tweaks it's just a faster Windows 7. I wish there were better drivers and more optimizations (like James said, Skype is buggy), but overall I'm doing alright. I don't spend any time on the Start screen though, all the Windows 8 apps suck and there is absolutely no advantage in using them over Desktop programs.

Agreed, ALL the apps suck - especially the skype app - it's just a nightmare to actually use.
 
i have recently taken the jump over to full win8pro (w/ wmc)

i used to run it in vmware, as a developer, through win7ult.

now i boot into win8pro, and straight into start8 (stardock).
but, as there are still flaws in the OS, i now have to run win7ult in vmware.

LMFAO

i think it runs smoother than win7 :D
 
One thing I will say is that it's damn fast. I installed it on my cousin's laptop with a Caviar Black and things are at near SSD levels of responsiveness. Don't like the layout, but i'm still reasonably impressed. Now to spend the next 4 hours or so trying to get the microphone drivers working for him -_-
